There is no such thing as a perfect relationship – there are just relationships that help you grow and relationships that hold you back. What supports you may look different than what supports me, and a big part of dating should be figuring out what that looks like for you. Unfortunately, society conditions us to believe that relationships should look a certain way and be a certain way, and that leads to a whole lot of people in relationships that do not help them grow at all.
That’s why I wanted to sit down with Aubrey Marcus and Whitney Miller, who might have the most radically open and conscious relationship I’ve ever seen. Now, I don’t think everyone needs to talk about it on their podcast to have a conscious relationship in 2019, but things don’t get better if you don’t talk about them at all and we can learn a lot about communicating in relationships from these two.
Aubrey and Whitney have been in a relationship for the past seven years. The first two years were monogamous and the last five years have been open, and they’ve been very public about that transition.
Open relationships are a bit of a loaded topic, and a lot of us assume that guys just suggest open relationships because they want to sleep with more people. But, as a love, sex, and relationship coach, Whitney actually sees more women who are interested in opening the relationship and don’t know a healthy way to approach the topic.
This just speaks to how much our society has constructed the “typical” roles of a relationship through gendered stereotypes, and perpetuating those stereotypes ultimately disempowers all of us.
So, I invite you to join us today as we have a frank and open conversation about relationships, sex, and intimacy. Because it’s necessary, and even though a lot of us know that, we have been putting it off.
Regardless of your relationship structure, monogamous or open, there are always ways to create more love, better sex, and happier relationships – but only if we talk about it!
