For this week's case, Gretchen is taking us south to Pulaski, TN. Our story centers on Mary Ann and Larry Hughes, a husband and wife duo that owned a farm and the downtown hardware store. They were beloved by all, but their story took a twisted turn when sweet Larry went missing in March of 1990.
Mary Ann claimed she had no idea about his whereabouts after dinner the previous evening. However, she started telling people he had run off with another woman, and the longer he was missing, the more unpredictable she became, even going so far as to burn her mattress in the front yard.
“She said for all she knew, Larry had done the no-pants dance on it with someone else and she wanted no part of that in her house anymore.” – Gretchen (18:35)
The town searched for Larry, but the case plateaued until his body was found in the forest one day. His death was confirmed, but it wasn’t until 25 years later that DNA evidence was uncovered in Mary Ann and Larry’s previous home. One thing is for sure…
“You have gots to be calling the police! You know someone was murdered in the house most likely and you find blood evidence – you need to call the police, OK?” – Gretchen (32:36)
