Flipped: a Rob Reiner Film in Review

Oct. 8, 2020

In this episode of Check It/Round Table Onna discusses Rob Reiner's film, Flipped, https://youtu.be/q40GxY5n2Dg, and why she watched this film because it was the character, Third in the Theory of Love Thai BL  drama series.  Onna considers how this film, though well made, is solidification of why she doesn't like most American films with the level of self-absorption of lead characters, such as Bryce and Bryce's dad.  Onna considers how Julie's dad with his consideration with the fact that the question is is a person more or less than the sum of their parts and how the quietness between people who care for one another can actually be better than the talk between them.  Onna also reviews why she liked how when Bryce finally realized how cool Julie was but by the time he had, he had insulted her family, yard, her chickens, and even her chickens' eggs and she realized that he was not the sum of his parts and he has to improve his character and plant a tree before she will give him a second chance--or a hundredth chance.

Onna considers how the interplay between Julie and her dad and Chet and Bryce shows familial mentoring in a positive way, which is very rare in film.  Onna also reviews how the scene involving conflict between Julie's mom and dad actually shows that conflict can be resolved well by people who love and care for each other and their family well.  Onna considers how this film truly shows that people change, both in good and bad ways and how it shows you should be your own filter and to not take things in all at once with your initial presumptions because often, they are not the right assumptions.   Onna concludes that Bryce may indeed have been 1/2 the person Julie was, but she helped him to be a better person. It's all here.  It's all real.
