Alla Weinstein - Offshore Wind: The Future of Irish Energy?

Nov. 20, 2020

This address is the fifth event in the 2020 ESB/IIEA lecture series entitled, REthink Energy. In her address, Alla Weinstein examines the important role that deepwater offshore wind energy is already playing around the world - and the role it will play in Ireland’s low-carbon energy future. She will discuss the ways that Ireland can harness its tremendous offshore wind resources by installing floating offshore wind farms off its Atlantic shoreline. Ms Weinstein argues that this development will help Ireland reach its decarbonisation and renewable energy targets. She shows that the technology needed for floating offshore wind turbines is proven and market-ready, and that, by advancing research and technology development, offshore wind could become a baseload energy source for Ireland. About the Speaker: Alla Weinstein isthe founder of Trident WindsInc, a deep-water offshore wind project development company. She leads the company’s efforts in developing a commercial scale floating offshore wind farm off the coast of California. Ms Weinstein has been in the field of marine renewables for the last 20 years. She currently serves as Energy Appointee to the ‘Washington State Coastal Marine Advisory Council’ and is the US Department of Energy’s C3E Ambassador to the ‘Women in Clean Technology Initiative’. Ms Weinstein is an active member of the American Wind Energy Association and is a frequent speaker in the United States and Europe on the development of renewable energy. She served as the first President of the European Ocean Energy Association.
