Unlabeled Leadership

046: Mary Raddant Knows the Trust Secret

April 20, 2021

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I invite guests to share personal stories about small acts of leadership that help shape their lives.

In Episode 46, Mary Raddant describes two moments that have helped her become more effective at leadership. She then describes what she did to develop one of her high-performing teams. Finally, Mary advises us on what we can do in our roles to lead more effectively.

00:00 Prologue

If you are going to lead a support function like HR effectively, you need you and your team to focus on results, think systemically, add value, and build meaningful partnerships with the departments that you support. In her Chief HR Officer role, Mary does this. Through her own professional development while at Target, Lowe’s, The Fresh Market, David’s Bridal, and now ALG Senior, Mary has effectively developed high-performing teams with solid levels of trust and support.

02:49 Part 1: Fish Market Foundations

Mary shares two stories, the first from Target and the second from Lowe’s, that exemplify moments of her own professional growth and helped shape how she develops and leads high-performing teams.

11:38 Part 2: The Secret for Building Trust

Trust isn’t something left to chance or to organic growth. In this story, Mary explains what she did to build the team that she led at Lowe’s.

18:20 Part 3: Be Resourceful and Curious

Mary advises us on some guiding principles that can make a difference in how you present yourself in your professional role and how you interact with teammates, other teams, and customers (both internal to the organization and external).
