Is Imperialism Immoral? Was the "Spheres of Influence" American Imperialism of the 20th and 21st centuries actually harmful, on its face? Yes, there are some notable exceptions where corrupt officials, soldiers, and others have acted horribly, but one should judge a system on the rule and not the exception. Japan, Germany, Afghanistan, and other nations have actively been hostile threats to the world. However, unlike any other nation before us, we did not colonize or annex these nations. We allowed them sovereignty with the only stipulation that we have bases on their soil. It really was a means of turning enemies into pseudo-allies. We live in an imperialistic world, the question is always: what kind of empire will rule over the world, not if there will be one.
