The Birth Story: Joy, Sorrow, and Divine Mystery

Dec. 20, 2024

In God’s economy, joy and sorrow are often handmaidens.

Christmas is a time of gladness –but often sorrow and joy go hand in hand. You can’t have the miracle of the resurrection without the cross. The birth stories of Jesus and his Eljah like cousin, John the Baptist, are no exception.

“Some longings have a season, but the nature of longings itself is universal. God has written everlastingness into our DNA; these time-bound hearts of ours were made to live forever, and when we cease to yearn and dream and ache and aspire, we cease to catch that soft sweet song haunting the borders of life, subtly, persistently, ardently calling us home.” -Lainer Ivester
