OUTSpoken welcomes guest Phillip Tyler, joining us as a part of “Uncomfortable Conversations: Dissecting a Black and White Divide”, a look into the separation between black and white cultures. Phillip Tyler currently sits as Vice President on the board of Spokane’s NAACP chapter.
We also welcome Sandra Williams, our second panelist on “Uncomfortable Conversations: Dissecting a Black and White Divide”. Sandra Williams is the Editor and Publisher of “The Black Lens” – the only African American newspaper in Eastern Washington. Sandra Williams also works with the LGBT students at Eastern Washington University.
Sandra Williams and Phillip Tyler will be part of a key panel discussion on race, racism and inequality in all elements of culture. “Uncomfortable Conversations: Dissecting a Black and White Divide” stems from the recent release of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s song “White Privilege 2”. Elements of that song will be brought up during our discussion and we hope to achieve an honest conversation about race in our nation.
The Black Lens is a local community newspaper that is focused on the news, events, people, issues and information of importance to Spokane’s African American community. The paper is published monthly and available free of charge at a limited number of pick up locations around Spokane. It is also available by mail with a paid subscription. The goal of The Black Lens is to be a positive influence, to encourage critical thinking, and to uplift Spokane’s African American community.
