Hello PhD

Reviews For Hello PhD

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to write a review because I love this podcast and I am constantly recommending it to people interested in grad school or in it already. There is such great content here and it’s delivered in a multitude of connecting ways for all types if listeners to enjoy.
I generally enjoy this podcast, I find it very helpful. It would be great if you could broaden your narrow focus of biomedical into general STEM. For example, if you don’t get into grad school in your first attempt a post bac is a great option. But they don’t exist in every field. Bridge programs are generally available only to minority students. So how do you get more lab experience? Especially if you’re changing fields from undergrad to grad? Anyway, keeping topics more general would be helpful to those outside of the biomedical fields.
They waste so much time (sometimes 15+ minutes) before getting to the point of the episode. Only downside, otherwise I really enjoy the content that actually relates to the episode.
I wish the hosts had been able to keep their political biases out of the episodes. It was interesting and humorous to hear their hubris to assume that they are absolutely correct. Their ‘training’ as scientists obviously missed the critical thought portion. As a scientist who has been in academia and industry I was hoping for a podcast that would actually show open inquiry and fairness. UNSUBSCRIBE.
This podcast does a great job of explaining all aspects of academia! It can be so hard for first generation PhD students to navigate the “boy’s club” that academia sometimes appears to be. These men seem so nice and approachable. Great speaking voices as well!
I have been preparing to apply to grad school for the past 2 years, and finding this podcast was the last piece of the puzzle I needed to get the ball rolling. I am submitting applications in December and feel so much more confident with HelloPhD’s tips and support. Thank you, Josh and Dan!
I can’t say enough about this podcast. It’s really helping me as I write my dissertation!!!
Josh and Dan have created the best podcast I’ve heard so far for PhD students, by combining the following three elements: 1. Intriguing interviews 2. Insightful information 3. Easy-going humor and banter I highly recommend this podcast for anyone going through, or wanting to learn more about, the PhD process!
Dear Josh and Dan, Thank you so much for making this podcast! I especially appreciate the practical financial advice. The humor mixed in with the content makes working through challenging research experiences less stressful!
This podcast does a great job of covering the challenges of graduate training in science in a very thoughtful and real way. Plus, they give great beer recommendations. 10/10. Outstanding podcast. Keep up the good work!
I’ve spent the last three days driving down the west coast to start my PhD at UCLA, and I’ve spent 90% of that drive listening to Hello PhD. Josh and Dan have so many practical tips and pieces of advice that really make you feel prepared for grad school and remind you of what to focus on as you pursue it. Beyond grateful to have run across this podcast.
Very informative.
I love all of your episodes and i ❤️ you I love HelloPhD
I rely on a lot of podcasts to get me through long hours in the lab and clicking in excel. But when I first saw this podcast, I thought, good grief, I'd rather listen to a podcast about anything else, even sportsball, to distract me from my day-to-day grad school reality. But I'm so glad the desperation of having listened to all my main podcasts led me to try an episode. Now I just hope Josh and Dan don't ever stop making it - or at least not until I graduate please!!! It's the perfect medicine for the grad student spirit - honoring the struggle that is grad school while inspiring something that feels like real hope for the future!
Love listening to the insight, humor, and wisdom Josh and Dan have to offer. Grad school is hard and it's comforting to know that you're not alone. It's also great for those considering grad school or those who know someone in grad school to better understand what it's like.
Informative and entertaining
I look forward to this every time it comes out. Relatable, personal, and honest. I even tried some beer based on their description of it, and was not disappointed! I also appreciate how they relate with audience tweets and emails. A lot of the examples in the podcast are specific to bio and other sciences-that-involve-benches, but don't let that dissuade you if you are in another feild. I'm in a social science, and I get a lot out of it :)

4/5

I enjoy the tips.
This is such an amazing show! They address topics that any graduate student can relate to in a way that is super fun. Some stuff is a bit bioscience specific (I’m an engineering grad student) but it is interesting to get that perspective and it is all very relatable. They give great advice and have really wonderful guest speakers. This podcast has changed how I think about my time as a graduate student and my future career. Thank you!
I heard about this podcast on r/labrats and again in the NIH newsletter. I have found every episode to be at least somewhat relevant to my career. It’s a very entertaining and high quality podcast. To the producers - know that this tool will be heavily used as I apply to graduate school.
I love how they talk about science casually and candidly. I also love their weekly etymology.
I’ve just caught up on the Hello PhD podcast while reviewing for finals. Josh, Dan, and friends do an awesome job at detailing the experience at each stage of the graduate school experience. They approach difficult topics, often suggested by viewers, and seek to explain the challenges that continuing education has. These challenges include gender and race bias, pay and student benefits, and applications. They even go as far to invite guests who are (or have) experienced these situations directly. As someone who is interested in pursuing a PhD, Josh’s and Dan’s guidance has been extremely valuable and will undoubtably contribute to my choices on school, lab, and program in the future.
Important topics discussed with intelligence, humor, and sensitivity. Josh and Dan have a ton of wisdom to share with anyone in any stage of a research career. Get some incredibly insightful and honest advice or just commiserate and learn how to help your friends still grinding their way through the system.
I love the premise of this show, but as a 5th year PhD student, I wish I’d found it earlier! Some of the stuff they address makes me wish I could just do everything over again. I do love when they review the beers - usually because it’s funny, not necessarily because it’s informative.
Should be required listening for anyone thinking of pursuing their PhD - a bit late for me (or maybe not…). thanks for taking on this complex and mysterious topic. My daughter is a undergrad chemistry major, and I’m making sure she hears about this program.
I love listening to Josh and Dan talk about the ins and outs of life as a graduate, doctoral, and post-doc researcher. I have a new appreciation for the aspects of this season of educational and professional life. Love the word games, and love the ethanol reviews. Great going guys!! Hope to meet up with you for some local ethanol soon!
Love these topics - and only wish the show had been there when I was doing my doctorate!
This podcast is great to know other people in science have the same day to day problems in lab . Entertaining stories and not too long to lose interest on a topic :)
Great podcast for anyone in a lab trying to figure out what happens next. Also great for those of us who want to think back and maybe cry a little that we didn’t have something like this to help get us through the agony of grad school. Josh and Dan do a fantastic job dealing with the issues that come up during a PhD experience with a sense of humor, and their podcasting style is extremely accessible. Perfect for the target audience.
