Wooden Overcoats

Reviews For Wooden Overcoats

5/5

I started listening to this a couple of weeks ago, since finishing I have tried to find another to feel the void. Nothing has worked so far. Acting, writing, humour, tone...this show has ruined other shows for me now.
Now look here (hah). This is definitely a favorite of mine; I’ve listened through all the episodes several times at this point, and probably will again. The story and characters are all fantastically done, and I love the dry (if at times a little dark) sense of humor. It’s just perfect. The voice acting is wonderful, and the background noise and chatter adds lovely submersion into the story while never being too much. I can’t wait for more!
I throughly enjoyed this podcast! You can listen multiple times and pick up new jokes. It’s very clever!
This is the most entertained I’ve ever been listening to a podcast, or listening about a funeral how, or listening to anything for that matter!

This was such a delight to listen too!
The comedy podcast all other comedy podcast wish they could be. Beautifully written & exquisitely cast. The only way I can think to describe it is; a cross between Parks & Recreation and Mystery Science Theatre (sans robots).
This podcast is smart, funny, and is probably the best audio comedy of all time. I am jealous of anyone hearing it for the very first time. ❤️🎧
The writing is so clever! It frequently has me laughing out loud. Antigone is my favorite, her voice is the BEST!!
Had me laughing out loud
I love Antigone’s character so much!!
The sense of humor is unique and hilarious. very British, very bizarre. I love it.
Totally ridiculous in the best ways and the last season had some wonderfully poignant scenes.
Wonderful characters and hilarious situations, wooden Overcoats is a must listen hidden gem in the world of audio dramas
So it’s good and funny, but a central part of the humor relies on the main three characters being in development stasis. Kind of like Red Dwarf where Lister specifically doesn’t grow and thus stays a perfect foil for River, Cat, and Kryten. Unbalancing that removes a subtle point of tension and I swear people knew this: there’s a reason Lister never takes his exams and Rimmer never learns his lessons. When characters like this developed, they develop as a group. Always. To do otherwise risks that careful interactive balance between characters which produces comedy. Anyway, that’s what happened here. Good characters, interesting balance. Flubbed it in the third act. High hopes for Season 4 though. The recent episode seems a return to form. We’ll see.
I genuinely can’t believe I only found this podcast (thank you, Reddit) a couple of weeks ago. I’ve already consumed all of it, and wish there were more. The characters are so consistent and spontaneously human. The humor is something I’ve yet to find executed so well in an audio drama. I rarely write reviews but to abscond after the season 3 finale would be a gross injustice to the wonderful group that gifted this podcast to the world. Sincerest appreciation from my neck of the woods!
Everything about this show, even the advertisements, is wonderful. The writing and sound work is so clever - this is by far my favorite podcast at the moment. Thank you all for sharing your talents!
Love this so much. The writing, the humor, the word play, the voice acting - all of it is amazing. If you’ve listened to and enjoyed Victoriocity, this has a similar vibe. Would love to have these writers and performers come together for another project like this. Just amazing.
I love Wooden Overcoats, 6 minutes into the first episode and I was laughing and hooked. I definitely recommend it to all my friends, the right amount of silly and dark humour.
Wooden Overcoats is so funny, I love the characters and the setting of Piffling, and hearing them develop over the last three seasons has been an absolute joy!
I absolutely love this podcast. The humor is right up my alley and it is such a fun and unique show. I would listen while doing mundane data tasks at work and have to duck my head to hide my fits of laughter. I just can’t recommend this show enough. Listen to it, love it!
Gonna struggle to not just write sonnets to Antigone Funn right now because while she’s amazing, this entire show deserves credit. You know the deal: rival funeral homes, narrator that’s a mouse, Eric Chapman having a mysterious past. One of our characters shares a name with a character on this show and we know they will never live up to their namesake, and that’s ok. Beth Eyre is giving the voice acting performance of our generation and my 68-year-old dad agrees--he sent me a text about Antigone Funn three days ago asking when the new season was coming out. This show is funny, this show has heart, this show is paced beautifully, you will love everyone on this show!
I found this just before a road trip and listening through season 1 with my family was so much fun. The show is British comedy at its best. Witty, snappy banter, an absurd premise, and a wonderful daffy set of characters. Can’t wait to get into the other seasons.
This show is truly amazing. You could not ask for better in a podcast or truly any comedy form. The craftsmandship, humour and character work is truly lovely and inspiring.
Similar in tone to Black Books, with equally funny and dynamic characters. Absolutely hilarious, a must listen!!!
I cannot say enough good things about this show! It is absurd, and hilarious, and occasionally poignant all in perfect balance. Everything about the show is a delight and it is well worth a listen.
A few weeks ago, a relative suggested listening to Wooden Overcoats, and I’m so glad I did. I’m only sorry I didn’t know about it sooner. Everything about it is absolutely brilliant, and it’s been a welcome escape from our current reality. I will continue to recommend it to everyone I know (and even to people I don’t; it’s that good). To everyone who works on the show: thank you for creating such a gem!
Now look here. If you’ve been longing for a comedic podcast featuring two rival funeral directors on an obscure island in the English Channel, consider your quest complete. And if you haven’t, give it a listen anyway - you won’t regret it. It’s a comedy with real heart and plenty of embalming fluid should that heart fail. You’ll grow to love the characters and will truly enjoy yourself!
I love every single minute of Wooden Overcoats, it’s absolutely stellar. Fun and engaging characters, pitch perfect voice acting and comedic timing, just the right amount of drama. It’s one of my top recommendations to my friends.
Thoroughly enjoying this. So much fun. So inane. So inherently clever. Brilliance and groaners coexisting in a reckless run though theirs and mine vivid imagination. Thanks for the trip. Worth every penny.
This is what you call brilliant. Sharp. Witty. Clever. And honestly who came up with this premise it’s so odd and perfect. Some of the best voice acting I’ve heard too. Felix Trench as Rudyard is especially amazing. Also the writing is hilarious. I think I might be addicted to this podcast?
This is a fantastic comedy. It isn't just empty jokes, but tons of character moments and development that keep things moving forward. The cast is brilliantly expressive, which means they do as much justice to the characters' low points as to their high ones. Most of all, the production is absolutely stellar. The sound design isn't standard and static, doing just enough to be adequate. It adapts, changes and quietly gets on with its life in the background, and everything is so much more vivid as a result. Thank you for this podcast.
Super intriguing, makes you laugh out loud, light drama comedy.
Laugh out loud funny; wonderfully entertaining. Love this podcast!
Words cannot begin to describe so much I love this podcast. It is original, it is clever, it is funny, and the characters are amazing. The first time I listened to Wooden Overcoats I actually laughed out loud. That was almost two years ago and this podcast still makes me laugh out loud ( which is not an easy feat if I have already heard the story). This podcast makes me happy. I hope you the reader of this review give it a chance. Maybe you will laugh out loud as well.
This is an utterly brilliant show. It’s ludicrous, improbable, and ridiculous in all the best ways. If you like dry humor with a razor sharp sense of timing, then this podcast is for you. I was sold when someone said “if you like Fawlty Towers, then you will love this podcast.” It’s a spot-on description. Five stars aren’t enough.
This is bizarre British comedy at its best. A main character who by all rights should be completely unlikeable and yet happens to be charming in a sort of pitiful way, the dry humor, the lovely accents (from an American's perspective),my favorite narrator in a podcast ever, and the absolute madcap shenanigans are the reasons to start listening to the show. Despite all the silliness, the show brings a suprising depth as well. I didn't think such a funny show could also bring me to tears, but it did. I love this show, and it's one of the few that I feel I can recommend to just about anyone.
Pulled me in and I just keep wanting more. I don’t want to finish as I always want to have another episode available. Creative writing, great vocal performances and wonderful wit.
Hands down one of my top audio fiction show. I love the characters, the banter is spectacular, and the pacing is tight. I never felt like an episode was dragging on or needed to trimmed. The show is so consistent that if you enjoy the first episode you have a good taste of what's in store.
Dry humor. Excellent cast. What more could someone ask for?
i can’t be the only person who wants chapman and rudyard to end up together👀
I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW. It’s honestly a travesty that they don’t do live shows in the U.S., because I would buy a ticket in a heartbeat. For those who can relate - I am a huge Edward Gorey fan, so a mix of silliness, wryness, and morbidity is my ultimate dream - and Wooden Overcoats DELIVERS. I feel attached to all of the residents of Piffling Vale, and consistently enjoy learning more about them. For a little more context (spoiler alert): - There is a funeral home with a bowling alley and chocolate fountain, and it only grows (improbably) from there - The only police officer in the village is also the owner of the candy shop (and yet she spends a lot of time explaining the ways in which eating sweets will eventually lead to an untimely demise) - There are two hospitals but only one doctor, who is eternally falling asleep while working - The village has a bus stop but no bus; the unruly village hoodlum teens hang out here, and it turns out that they mainly discuss the intricacies of modern art - There is a short episode (which they create between seasons) about a publishing company called Random Mouse - because it’s actually run by mice. It features just the right amount of rodent puns (i.e. a lot of them)
I’ve been a fan of British comedy since I discovered Monty Python’s Flying Circus on PBS when I was in high school (a very long time ago)-I can’t say enough good things about Wooden Overcoats-a true delight!!
I love this show. It just cracks me up. I’ll laugh out loud at work and get funny looks. Evrytime someone asks for a recommendation on r/AudioDrama, this is definitely part of my list.
Just finished season 3 and so excited for the next! The writing is so sharp and the balance between humor and emotional scenes is done so well; the fact they can have genuinely touching moments that aren’t played off as a joke in the same episode that makes you laugh out loud is amazing. The VA’s are amazing (I love Beth Eyre’s performance as Antigone), the sound design is on point, the characters are hilarious, and if you aren’t listening already, mind as well start now!
dude give it a listen bc it’s so good lol
I absolutely love this podcast, and I have listened to the episodes multiple times! I recommended it to all of my friends and encourage everyone to give it a listen.
I love Piffling Vale. I love Georgie, Antigone, and all the rest. It’s laugh out loud funny, but also beautiful and touching.
Just wonderfully brilliant!!! Great job guy
