I’m a long time listener of Freakonomics, and avid soccer fan. This show is a great display of both Stephen Dubner’s ability to bring the best out of an interviewee and Solomon Dubner’s extensive knowledge and passion for the sport on all fronts.
Stumbled across this podcast after watching the freakonomics radio episode on the World Cup. I’m a big fan of Stephen and love this colab with his son Solomon. Fun conversation between father and son. Only issue I have with it is the harsh tone often used towards the greatest club in the world 😉 ¡Hala Madrid!
Thanks for Nothing Solomon!.....Like you I was a hater of that particular Ginger. You
Humanized him and now I have to like him just a bit. Great show on soccer from the view of a soccer crazed NY teenage and his brilliant father. Father/son conversations that could make any soccer dad jealous.
I think this show is great! Sure the young Dubner is skewed towards Barcelona but I don't see how that is much different from the guys at the Guardian or Men in Blazers! Keep the shows coming!!!
I am a huge soccer fan and have been for the better part of 20 years now. This podcast lacks a lot of substance and depth. The host makes routine elementary errors and is generally uninformed when it comes to soccer. A lot of the commentary reminds me of the none sense coming out of Alexi Lalas' mouth.
On a side note, I am a huge Freakonomics fan so I hope this improves in the years to come.
This podcast warms my heart because it's adorable listening to a 16 year old try to explain soccer to his dad. It just needs some serious work. Mostly, if Solomon is going to help his Dad understand things, he should be a little less biased. He has very little information and mostly just lauds Barcalona. If he wants to be a professional in the field of football, then he should maybe consider how to remove himself from results.
Solomon is doing a good job. His passion for soccer is evident, and Stephen's contributions are great. Keep working on your enunciation though. At times it's hard to understand. Also it would be great if you analyzed tactics a little more. Great work!
It has a father/son dynamic that is just unbeatable. Solomon's passion for the sport combined with Stephen's passion for his son is incredible.
Oh, and Solomon... If you lived in Kansas City... You'd be an MLS fan ;).
Love the Dubner clan and what Stephen and Solomon bring to the pitch. Funny thing is, I'm not crazy about football but after listening I might keep my eye on the tables this upcoming season.
Enjoy the passion and detail from Solomon. And appreciate the basic but thoughtful questions from his Pops. Allows me to keep up.
Would recommend to anyone! A true pleasure in my weekly podcast rotation.
I love the show, and father and son are refreshing. I know it's biased to Barcelona, and that's ok. It shows Solomon's passion for the game. I love that they are in France for Euro 16, sounds like so much fun. One small critique, Solomon should work a little on annunciation, sometimes he's so exited and passionate, he speaks fast. Other than that, I listen to every episode!
Slanting all your coverage to pander to Barca fans, even though they are a large base, is a statistically imprudent decision. You're cutting your small audience in half.
Great pocast about "futbol". As a mom I have trouble keeping up with my own son's passion for futbol and I didn't have time for the details. Now we listen to the podcast together while we drive to soccer. Dubner asks the questions I did not know to ask, and my son and I listen to the answers. Pretty much every kid around that age has no trouble relating to Solomon.
Passion for soccer aside, I find this podcast to be instructive as to how parents, specially dads, should engage with their teenage children. They could learn from Dubner how to brush aside the teenage style, and welcome with admiration the adult sprouting by their sides.
Its a nice try. Interesting subject. However, voice quality in Solomon's voice lacking if not distracting, and at times difficult to understand. As a result, Stephen's voice comes as a blessing. Keep at it though!
I think it's fantastic to hear the young Dubnar get his start in podcasting. My introduction to this Dubnar duo was listening to the Freakanomics World Cup podcast with my then 11 year old fellow footy fanatic while driving from Rome to Pompeii. We will have to listen to the Euros special as we attend the England match in St Etienne this summer. I'd enjoy more opinion content and less of a league rundown. Include MLS for 5 stars.
Great questions from Stephen Dubner and extremely skewed and often poor replies.
It's a cross between a barcelona fan with a radio show and a dad indulging his sons passion. Potential... Hope it gets better.
I've always loved soccer, but it's hard for an outsider to easily be introduced to it or understand it. I’ve searched for a podcast that both gives background for the things I don’t understand, while still going deep into content. This podcast does it. Plus, the father-son duo is hilarious.
