Reviews For Decoding TV

Interesting topics but David’s need to be a contrarian and continually taking a negative or pessimistic stance is tiring.
I wonder why liberals always have to insert their political opinions even when it’s not really relevant to what they’re discussing.
Clearly brainwashed by Liberal media and unfortunate geographical upbringings, but turn out a decent show when they keep their political bias out of their mostly informed entertainment coverage.

Your recent Star Wars talk was absolutely asinine and uninformed. The show is so awful that you are defending Harvey Weinstein former personal assistant who has no qualifications or talent. This podcast is rubbish.
I would argue the guy who poisoned his co-workers clearly was influenced by the T.V. character George Costanza rather than Walter White. Slipped him a Mickey.
I listen to the podcast weekly and enjoy the conversation between Dave and Patrick. It’s interesting to see when they agree on shows and disagree on shows. I just hope they eventually cover Invincible season 2 part 2!
Somehow the host manages to sound disgusted at the show he watched, the show he’s reviewing the podcast he’s on and basically…everything.. Actually he LOVESS the sound of his own voice and breathing..but he’s gonna be so “confused” about everything in any given show..why bother listening just rewatch, said show for yourself and save your ears for a pod that actually likes TV..
Patrick is a great conversation partner and podcaster! He has a great rapport with Dave and always sounds excited. Love him. Dave is great as always, but I think he’s finally found his footing with this new format!
…constantly says the the co-host full name or his name at all? He’s the only one on the show with him…weird!
And check out the Filmcast!
Love David. He always gets great guests. Great The Curse discussion. Patrick is a great choice. Have liked him since the 1up show.
Look, I am a long time listener of David’s work and follow almost everything he does. I was excited to listen to his Fargo season 5 episode but was quite dismayed to find out a male pretending to be a girl was his co host for the episode. Very sad
Why are you booing him he’s right???

Another mediocre podcast turned to garbage because the hosts can’t contain their echo chamber politics for one hour.
I don't listen to every episode because I don't watch a lot of these shows, but I will follow Dave Chen on every journey that he takes.
David Chen is the best. Sara Mars, for gods sake mute yourself when you vape or smoke or whatever you were doing. Like nails on a chalkboard.
Used to enjoy this pod. Now it seems like every episode is David complaining.
Dave’s always great, but I love the chemistry between these two and PLEASE MORE POLITICS! You’re scaring all the loser conservatives in these reviews, so clearly it’s working! Drink those right winger tears!!!! White fragility is awesome!!
This discussion was the first one I’ve come across that mentions two problems I also had with S2: 1. Claire being a MPDG and 2. The loss of a reasonable priced family diner for a high-end restaurant. I appreciated David sharing his family’s connection to the restaurant business and how important regular diners are to people and the community they serve. Nothing wrong with Camy wanting to open a high-end restaurant, he trained to do such a thing for years. But he could’ve acknowledged the loss of the Beef. I know it represented his family’s disfunction but it still fed and served people in the community for years. And now those folks won’t be able to afford the new restaurant. Anyway, I enjoyed this season as well but it could’ve been more tightly written with a few adjustments. Also, yes, the drive-thru window…
I absolutely adore your TV analysis. Been listening for many years. But today’s comment from Roxana on Bo’s roommate’s aversion to ginger being a “micro aggression from a mildly racist white male” was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I’m sorry, but I’m out.
Does Roxana like anything? I was excited to find a Black Mirror podcast and was familiar with David but the first episode I listened to had Roxana as a cohost and I remembered her from a Game of Thrones podcast and was so bummed. I could only listen yo a few minutes of her hating on the show before I turned it off. If you don’t like the show please don’t review it.
Warning, Dave and his guests are big time, trans-the-kids libs. Wish he’d leave politics out of it, he’d have a 5 star from me.
4 stars as most shows are great. Always a fan of a David Chen and was excited to see he was reviewing Black Mirror. Then I learned the co-host was Roxana and was bummed because I had forced my way through the white lotus shows. She’s great in her own right but the chemistry with David is off and seems quite awkward. They have different frames of reference, different senses of humor, and different pacing that makes for a stifling product.
I listened to the first few reviews on the Black Mirror Series. When reviewing episode 3, David made a a sweeping and stereotypical comment about a political party in the US desiring a return to the 1960s when racism and sexism was prevalent. I unsubscribed right there. This toxicity and complete white wash is what is ruining the country and encouraging extremism. I am a MODERATE thinker and sick of people like this on both extreme political sides making one sided bigoted comments. Yes it is stereotyping and bigotry to judge an entire group of people, including white and religious. Here is a crazy idea - review a show without injecting YOUR biases and personal bigotry.
I really enjoy the succession recap podcast but does dave give his thoughts on the show? He really seems not interested. Might be to many podcasts.
This podcast would only last 10 minutes per episode without their constant Trump bashing. This is a show about television not your ridiculous political rhetoric
Every episode is better than the last as David and Kim’s familiar banter with one another gets funnier and more adorable. Love these two. Very smart analysis of the show.
My husband and I have been listening since like 2017, through GOT and Decoding Westworld. The latest Succession pod is fab. Great insights - keep it rolling DC!
So good!
This review is of Decoding TV’s analysis of Succession. Great analysis and insights. But there are two problems: the hosts talk over each other too much and they both, for some reason, need to smack their lips before and after statements they make. I’m not sure whether it’s dry mouth or a form of punctuation (in their minds). But mouth sounds and any sort of ‘casting is a near dealbreaker. I like you both. Good luck.
David Chen always puts out good quality podcasts. I’ve listened to many of his reviews of shows and he always brings in good insights and takes on shows. The two star rating has nothing to do him and critical take on the show and is on Kim and her constant use of “like” and voice fry by Kim. She sounds like a high schooler who uses the word as a filler. It’s nails on a chalkboard disturbing and I don’t know if I’ll keep listening.
Vocal fry with limited insight and lots of “likes”
Great recaps and weekly discussion with a range of friendly co hosts, plus wildly entertaining ad reads
It is interesting to hear that Kim Renfro is an unabashed “like” interjector. She says that this juvenile and unnecessary interjection is part of naturalistic speaking. Maybe, but it is still difficult to listen to and obscures any useful insights Kim may have. I will take fluency and erudition any time. After all, this is an aural medium. Kim, learn a lesson from the great Joanna Robinson and work to improve your presentation as Joanna has done over recent years.
The Sweet Smell of Succession was the Succession podcast for adults whereas Decoding TV's version is the Succession podcast for dummies with listener comments. (The listener comments are actually pretty good, maybe too good? Maybe better than anything Dave has to add?) Forget precise recaps w/audio snippets, just uhs, duhs, and fangirl nonsense. Marsha's divorce is now final, pay attention.
Another TV podcast from a guy that doesn’t seem to actually like TV
Of pods bragging about viewing screeners. Just watch TV like the rest of us.
Really enjoyed Andor reviews. Patrick and Dave dynamic is awesome. Please do more shows together!

My favorite tv podcast!
I just started listening to the White Lotus finale episode. Had to turn it off after 20 minutes because I felt so uncomfortable hearing the male host interrupt the female host (Roxana?). It seemed as though she was a guest host, but I’m not sure - either way, she presented a lot of factual accuracy about White Lotus as well as The Godfather, and was overall more precise and clear than the male host. Yet each time she presented something he tried to smother her and belittle her contribution. It felt awkward, and all the more so because she was coming across as more alert, intelligent, and professional than him! For instance, he kept fumbling over his words while reading a letter, then randomly said “end quote” at the end of one of his statements. He seemed exhausted, underslept, or stressed to the point of confusion. So why was he talking over Roxana and basically trying to shut her up? Maybe this was a one-off but I was so bothered by this that I will not take the time to give a chance to any other episodes.
I like this show but David constantly constantly interrupts Roxanna and doesn’t give them any pauses to add some input. It’s super annoying and makes me not want to listen. I’ve listened to other shows with David and other male co hosts and he doesn’t do the same thing. Give Roxanna a show of her own!
Love this podcast- original cast of kings podcast was fantastic. I’d love to hear more from his co hosts, he kind of glosses over others voicing their perspective on the show. Also, David- stop interrupting and talking over your cohost. Makes it difficult to listen to at times.
David Chen has become one of my favorite podcasters due to the clear and comprehensive analysis he and his various partners convey. I particularly enjoy his repartee with his cohost when there is disagreement concerning predictions as to plot or response to scenes. I do think his HOTD partner deserved more credit for her superior knowledge of the book and wished she deferred less to him. Overall I appreciate the structured format of analysis in each podcast series and enjoy the comprehensive nature of dissection for each episode.
As we near the end of season 2, I want to say that David and Roxana’s podcast has distinguished itself as the only one I hear that offers criticism as well as compliments. I really appreciate especially Roxana’s thoughtful and direct insights. A thoroughly entertaining and thought- provoking show! Thanks.
I started listening for Westworld and stayed for all the other shows! I have enjoyed learning more about David Chen’s background - I trust his opinion more now that I know he has work in TV and tech. I’d like to hear more about his credentials. David Chen is widely respected in the TV podcast community, and I feel like he is referenced often and picks up on things that no other profesional critic gets, like the homosexual cheating storyline in White Lotus. I enjoy most of the coverage, but I really couldn’t stand the andor coverage. I tried many times to listen and couldn’t get myself through it. I understand why David would want to cover this show, but I just don’t trust his opinion as he is not a Star Wars fan or expert. The co-host didn’t even seem to like Star Wars, or enjoy talking about it. He lost major credibility when he didn’t pick up on the separatists storyline in the first episode. I would encourage David Chen to always answer, “why should I listen to this guy?” And if there’s not a good answer, you don’t have to cover every show. Your fans wil still tune in for the next one.
This podcast and network are top notch in the world of TV and film analysis. Dave Chen is an expert on thought-provoking, inclusive, in-depth breakdowns of all your favorite shows and movies. Can’t recommend this higher!
This David Chen guy has got to chill with trying to be a part of every podcast. He needs to pick something he’s actually interested in to have a podcast about bc he may know a little about a lot but he knows a lot about NOTHING. I try to avoid him bc if he’s hosting it then it’s gonna be literally plot synopsis - which may be what some ppl are interested in. He’s just rude to his cohosts also. They know the material. Let them lead.
