The Itinerant Angler Podcast

Reviews For The Itinerant Angler Podcast

I ran across this podcast and fell for it like a trout to a X-wing caddis! The approach and laid back discussion remind me of the many nights sitting around a table talking fish, flies, and passing the whisky. Every time I turn these podcast on during a commute my mind is shutting off work and looking forward to the next water outing. Great job! 👍
I was looking for a pod cast that would help me get a better understanding of and about fly fishing I found the one. Thank you for this podcast I will be taking up fly fishing now.
Zach conducts great interviews with a range of professionals and enthusiasts of the outdoor world. In addition, he curates good music for each episode.
A lawyer by trade but a fly fisherman at heart, Zach Matthews is a great asset to the sport. You've probably seen his articles in the magazines or on his website. He's a fine writer and has broad appeal for both novice and experienced fly anglers. This podcast is a must for commuters. Zach has such a positive impact on the sport of fly fishing that one can almost forgive him for being an Arkansas Razorback (go A-State Red Wolves!). This guy gives you information about the industry that you didn't think to ask about. He's a walking search engine. Download all previous episodes and listen during the commute. Awesome info. Thanks, Zach!
You are the National Geographic of fishing podcasts!
There is always something interesting to listen to. Zach does a great job interviewing and has a wide range of guests and topics. One of my favorite podcasts and a great way to relax after a day fishing.

Just found this one. Great listening to on commute to and from work while I can't be fishing. Bluegrass and fly fishing, doesn't get better than that. Keep it going.
The guest makes the podcast and the host understands that. Good show
I used to like this podcast, but his gushing over monte burk and the absolute derp in that episode was more than I could take. It was absolute flyfishing and hunting snobbery, and utter BS on som many levels and topics. If you want to actually learn something about flyshing, then "Ask About Flyfishing" by Roger Mapes is a vastly better podcast to listen to. This is the "People" magazine equivalent of the flyfishing media.
Itinerant Angler opened my ears to Podcasts. Zach does such a great job introducing the listener to a vast array of experiences and products. His catalog of guests is amazing and their stories and associated professions are captivating. Great Job!
Zach does a terrific job of bringing a wide array of topics and guests to us via The Itinerant Angler podcast. He also has introduced me to some musicians that I would have never been exposed to were it not for his eclectic stable of songs. (Case in point: Wailin Jennys) Thanks for all you do, Zach!
Unlike any other fishing podcast I've found. Fantastic. I've now listened to every episode and every one was entertaining and extremely informative. I even went back and listened to some I skipped at first because the title didn't interest me as much, and they were just as great. Through excellent interviews this podcast provides great insight into the inner workings of both the industry and lifestyle of fly fishing. Keep them coming Zach!
One of the best podcasts on the Sport! I stumbled onto his website and subscribed to the podcasts and my only complaint or regret is that it isn't a daily cast. I downloaded all the past eposides and listened to them on my commute with my 2 young boys (10 & 12) and even they get excited now when a new one comes out. GREAT stuff Zach...keep them coming!
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the recent podcast on fly fishing in Europe. I've been to Europe numerous times, thought about fishing but never managed to do it because I didn't know how to go about getting on the water. This podcast was very helpful to that end. Hope to fly fish Slovenia someday!
Zach comes across as a very likable guy and he manages to find and conduct podcast/interviews that are a touch more unique than most. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent.
Too many corporate plug sessions disguised as 'teaching' podcasts with soft questions and lots of cheerleading by Zack for the particular product or company being interviewed. I am done with this podcast.
I've downloaded the complete catalog and enjoyed every one. Keep it up Zach!
Diverse and interesting!
Love the podcast. A fresh perspective that should appeal to young and old alike. Keep up the great work. Cheers

The best, most interesting and relevant fly fishing podcast out there.
it's like Christmas morning for me when I see a new podcast showing for the itinerant angler. I have been following Zach's podcasts for several years and they have always been entertaining in content, information and music. Zach has not only helped me and informed me in the fly fishing world, he has awakened my past love of blue grass music. If you start listening to the podcasts you will be hooked! eric
Nothing low brow here. Great content. Great music. High production quality.
I have doubts about Zack's professionalism when it comes to April Volkey interviews. The two interviews he had with April are full of anecdotes about April's personal life. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HER PERSONAL LIFE. If you compare discussions from Zack's other interviews with April Vokey interviews, the contrast in substance is striking. I do not know if Zack's friendship with April restricts him from being professional, but at least that is what I have experienced from these two interviews. Hopefully this is a fluke and not a trend.
Zac does a great job providing content that you can't get from magazines or tv shows. He's from the southeast, so there's a sense of balance and inclusion to the podcasts that you normally dont find with tour traditional trout bum. Keep them coming!
If you fish with a fly rod and aren't on the mailing list of the AARP, this is the podcast for you. If you are on the AARP mailing list, well - this is still really good info. Zack is interested, intellegent and doesn't have his nose in the air about what fly fishing "is supposed to be." He is the kind of guy I fish with all the time. But he is smarter.
Great content. I like how it introduces the listeners to all aspects of fly fishing not just the expensive exotic fly travel that I am not able to do at this time. I have really enjoyed listening to this podcast. Keep up the good work.
Zach does a great job of covering the various topics and personalities within the fly fishing industry. This is the most enjoyable Podcast for someone who enjoys the sport.
A great podcast with a wide variety of content, great interviews, and a good selection of modern bluegrass music. Sound quality starts out good in the early episodes and quickly progresses to excellent. Zach does a great job producing them. Give it a listen, and you'll come to enjoy it for a variety of reasons.
I really enjoy this podcast. I've started listening from the first episode and I'm about halfway through. The podcasts have improved over time and are very informative. I'm even beginning to enjoy the music that Zach has been sharing on this podcast. Thanks for taking the time to publish these!
Started at episode 1 and now up to 50. Great resource. Would love to hear some more kiwis and aussies in the show. Thanks for the hard work Zach.
Zach does a really good in selecting his guest. They are great in adding depth to our sport. His questions are always good and never an awkward moment is present. I look forward to each new podcast and epsecially enjoy the length of these podcasts. Keep up the good work.
This is the best fly fishing podcast. Zach does a great job with the interviews and asks the important questions. I end up listening to a podcast 3 to 4 times to get as much information out of the interviews. I always learn something new and unexpected, like the interview on Gary Loomis on what he is doing now.
Zach! Thank you so much for continuing your excellent work! We emailed a couple of times early on, then things changed and I didn't listen for about a year, and now I've just listened through all your available episodes. I love how you have added the music. You are also a skillful interviewer and find very interesting people to interview. This is such an odd and compelling sport that has ahold of us, and I appreciate how you help us with that! Thanks, John Oerter

Very informative. Love listening to all the people and the music. Keep up the good work!
I have recently taken up the sport and was searching randomly for Fly Fishing info and podcasts. I've listened to several - but this is by far the best! A varied and wide range of interviews and topics - all done with depth and interest. Zach has a great interviewing style...it's vox humana! Down to earth and fun. For the long time angler and the beginner! Just awesome!
Zach does a fantastic job with this podcast. Always has relevant guests and he keeps the show fresh. I look forward to downloading new episodes. Keep up the good work!!!!!
This is not your ordinary angling podcast. Great interviews with those that have influenced fishing. Even the back issues are worth listening to. Nothing dated here. My favorites are Barry & Cathy Beck, Lefty Kreh and Jason Borger. Their stories are entertaining and enlightening. And Zach's style easy on the ear. I find myself looking forward to the next issue.
This is the best podcast out there. A great mix of topics with a polished and knowledgeable interviewer. I just wish they were a bit more frequent.
Difficult to review as the address is incorrect, so I can't subscribe.
This is probably the best fly fishing podcast going hands down. Zach spends just enough time with each guest to provide a really good feel for the subject matter being discussed. His production quality is extemely high making for enjoyable listening as well.
Zac provides a great coverage of flyfishing topics that are applicable to all flyfishers. The pocast sound is good and subject matter is covered well.
If an entertaining, informational and thought provoking podcast about flyfishing is what you seek, look no further. Zach Matthews interviews fly fishing luminaries, as well as up-and-comers across a broad range of the sport, from trout to tarpon, Atlanta to Alaska. I've listened to all episodes and there isn't a bad one in the bunch. Highly recommended.
Zach is one of my top connections to whats happening in the world of flyfishing and keeps me aware of so many new things. He is great in getting terrific guests to interview and asks the questions I'd ask...plus several more that make the discussion better. My friends & I learn alot from Zach & his guests and always find things to talk about after listening. Wish I could fish w/ him sometime.
The Itinerant Angler is doing a great job, especially providing interviews with top-notch names in the fly-fishing world. Until podcasting, novices depended on magazines, the occasional fly fishing show in their local area or video tapes. Zach's talent as an interviewer and his ability to hook up with the leading personalities is providing a wealth of information for the fly-fishing community. Enjoy!
This is the best of its kind. Entertaining, knolageable and it has great audio quality.
I stumbled across this the other day and listened to a few episodes, not expecting much I have to admit. However I found myself downloading ALL of them and spending as much time as possible listening. Wonderful interviews with extremely knowledgeable individuals in all areas of the sport. If you love fly fishing, please give this podcast a chance. I think you'll love it. Well done Zach, I look forward to many more
I have enjoyed your podcasts VERY MUCH...and that's an understatement! They have been educational, entertaining, communicated in a clear fashion, and I find them to be real. Thank you for taking the time to do this, and I look forward to listening in the future. Jack
Educational and entertaining. One of the most detail oriented, creative, and informational fly fishing podcasts. Zach brings out the best in his guests. His questions are those that I'd want to ask the guests If I had the opportunity or the creativity. Zach not only asks about fly fishing techniques and tactics, he inquires about the stories behind the inovaters, travelers, photogrphers, and characters in our lifestyle. Some episodes are science oriented, some are stories you would hear around a campfire or at a pub. I've learned a lot from the podcasts and always have them handy for road trips and the gym.
Like many fly fisherman, I had grown tired of the same old "core group" that get interviewed by every rag, and appear on the same old fishing shows. Zach seeks some of the new faces of the sport and their commentary is always refreshing to say the least.
