The Remnant with Jonah Goldberg

Reviews For The Remnant with Jonah Goldberg

I’m actually starting to feel guilty that I’m not a Dispatch supporter. I’m planning to change that. Getting podcasts like The Remnant for free are such a gift. We need voices like Jonah’s amplified in our insane times. I really enjoyed the recent episodes with Sadanand Dhume and Allen Guelzo. I always learn something new with The Remnant. Keep crushing it Jonah!
Love what you do. Thanks!
Hey “principled conservatives!” It’s a binary choice. Your “above it all,” “don’t blame me, I voted for” (insert obscure classic reference) is garbage. The choice is Biden v Trump. A vote for McKinley is a vote Trump. A vote for Reagen, McCain, or pick anyone, is a vote for Trump. The problem is Jonah’s life will remain unchanged.

It took a lady getting punched in the face and the UN to act moronically for Jonah to work his way back to some hard conservative positions, but glad to hear it anyway Jonah lately uses his genius to split the difference rather than make a difference. I guess I would be one who he claims “catastrophizes” everything. I guess it’s fine to be outraged and prosecute a former president for his actions, but don’t be surprised when presidents that don’t control border, unilaterally try to forgive debt etc. suffer similar trials.. uncharted territory these days. Trump on blast in this one but as the public, in record numbers, retreat into gated communities, private schools (mainly for safety)and twitter enclaves, I wish Jonah would use his genius to truly battle the cultural trends. He seems forced by his business model to call the, admittedly ridiculous , extreme right blog posts “profoundly stupid” while ignoring all of absurd stuff going on around him. But have been with him since the ‘90s so will always check in with what he has to say. Why you leave out feckless (maybe corrupt) DAs, porous/dangerous borders, runaway spending, crime, public schools, etc etc in the equation of the “rube” Fox viewer is baffling to me. Maybe Fox hasn’t changed that much since 2015, but you have. I believe Susan Rosen was first to use term “crushing morosity” in a podcast which was hilarious. Need to give her a nod for it. The word “performative” is so weak sauce. (When you don’t want to agree with someone who actually voices a hardline conservative policy. ). It’s not as smart sounding as Jonah and his partner thinks it sounds. Jonah reclaims his 5 on this one. Really good conversation. Previous podcast-
Jonah Goldberg is insightful, funny, and his pop culture references are pure gold.
My favorite thinker and impromptu talker is also a very very good interviewer. Love it.
Very informative but too Pollyanna at the end. Democracy is resilient huh? Venezuelans and a number of Central and South American countries would rightly dispute that contention. No discussion of suppression of free speech and how conservatism is increasingly marginalized. Authoritarianism is fragile? Russia, China, Iran, Cuba? All in power and getting more powerful.
This guy rips on republicans better than MSNBC & Democracy Now. Who needs Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman
Jonah, while interesting to listen to, is clearly no conservative. Anybody can call themselves whatever they want, but he clearly it is not a conservative, which I believe he actually once was. He stated that Biden has not been a very good president. Biden has been a horrendous president, but Jonah hates Trump more than he could ever love America. Not a Trump fan myself, but I have not been deranged as Goldberg has. What a waste. 02/10/24--Professes to be a both sideser but lets Democrats off the hook all the time. Jonah definitely is not a conservative anymore. He is right of center, but barely. He says he is a both sideser, but rails on Republicans endlessly and throws in a sprinkle of giving the Democrats a hard time just to say he looks at both sides. I have enjoyed his podcast, but I'm beginning to think he is either a phony or the most self unaware so-called conservative out there. Do better, Jonah. 12/30/2023 I really have enjoyed this podcast even though Goldberg is a both sideser on steroids. However, his latest show was mind-boggling. First he said the whack jobs on the right are worse than the whack jobs on the left, but then corrected his true feelings by taking that back a little. However, the big one was calling Charles CW Cook a fraud and grifter, and put him in the same bucket as Candace Owens. Good grief, are you serious? Cook is one of the most thoughtful people out there and is not a grifter in any way, shape, or form. Get a grip, Jonah. -----------------------------------------------------Initial Review: First, let me say that at this point, I cannot stand Donald Trump. However, Goldberg said there was no value to his presidency. Seriously? The judicial picks, the border security, the best economy in 50 years , and he can see no value in the Trump presidency? Would he have rather had Hillary Clinton for four years? Trump is a mess that I wish would just go away, but Goldberg is blinded by his hate for him. He seems to loathe most conservatives for some reason, as well. If you never thought a conservative could be an elitist, all you need to do is look at Jonah Goldberg and you will know otherwise. boy, do I miss his mom. Goldberg seems to criticize conservatives about 95% of the time and occasionally gives the left a hard time with a "Oh yeah…and the left, too..." Not sure what happened to him after he wrote about liberal fascism, but I give him three stars for having people like Matthew Continetti on. Other than that, his never Trumper insanity has made him hyper critical of the right and he leaves the left alone for the most part. And by the way, I don't like Trump either, but it hasn't made me nuts.
Our beloved Mr. G is finding his rhythm… I got hooked on his writing a while ago and bit by bit his talents seem to be strengthening his podcast abilities. If I had a criticism it would be that the decibel level at times can make hearing some guests a bit challenging, unless I’m using earbuds. But if that’s all I have to complain about… PS: Please never stop the ruminant. One of the best parts of my week.
Jonah Goldberg is always a great source for conservative viewpoints. I have been a Remnant listener from day one and will continue to enjoy all of the content provided. Jonah is wondering lately if his ruminant is becoming less interesting. I personally think that his personal content is as strong as ever. However, in comparison to the increasing quality of the rest of The Remnant’s content, it may be possible it just seems less interesting in comparison to amount of quality content being provided. Simply put, we don’t have to listen to only Jonah to get the conservative content we are looking for!! His voice is one, but through the many quality products provided, we don’t have only one any longer! Thank you Remnant! Keep doing Ruminant is you want, but your other stuff is great too.

You said today your solo pods are not being well received. I much prefer them to you guest pods. Keep it up and keep ‘em coming.
I have a huge amount of respect for Jonah even though I am admittedly to the left of center. Though he may make me grit my teeth at a lot of his framing of social situations, I’m glad that there are conservatives out there that aren’t part of “a homogeneous blob of evil.” I don’t think they are, anymore than I am as a part of the left. I know for a fact most left-leaning sorts are not homogeneous at all. (FYI, it’s why we lose in red states nine times out of 10.) Great work, but honestly I may send you a dentist bill for the tooth grinding for some of your more Pollyanna-esque views on the state of the Republican Party. Maybe that’s because I live in Texas and have seen some really messed up things go down in the name of the team sport that my state’s government has made of politics. Or maybe I’ve just lost faith in the Republican Party because most of the highest profile members have made very clear their stance and that stance has embraced a more nationalistic views with all the problems therein, while the members I had admired have all been forcibly retired. I sure as heck didn’t move the goalposts of my ideology. If I am a liberal now, it is because the alternative is moving so far right I can’t with any amount of good faith back them. That aside, I do truly appreciate Jonah’s take. And, yes, I wanted to give you 3 stars, but I realized it’s because my jaw hurts when I listen to some of your stances and that wasn’t a fair view via-a-vis the actual gains I get from this podcast. (Again, one day you may get a bill from my dentist.) Keep up the excellent work.
The only reason this isn’t 5 stars is Jonah has such a wide range of guests from psychology professors to politicos to historians of all different personalities that some episodes will be better than others. The experimentation is part of what makes it great though. The best eps I find are people he knows well and therefore holds a great conversation, who agrees on many things but disagree on a few topics that makes it fun. I find I side with Jonah about as often as the guest when that happens.
I enjoy Jonah’s commentary and discussions with guests. Refreshing to hear a genuine political conversation and productive discussions on disagreements on issues. He seems like a genuinely good dude that is capable of understanding someone else’s arguments as well as his own.
Jonah has a such clear and consistent worldview that, once you've gotten him calibrated by listening for a while, you can get a good idea of whether or not you'd agree with his take on a particular issue. And even when you don't, you'll get something out of hearing him discuss it. He doesn't pull punches or run after fads, and opines with wit and open-mindedness on all the important issues and events. He's also very funny, and has great pop culture taste (generally--he's tragically wrong in his love for Game of Thrones and his hatred for DC movies). The podcast has wonderful variety: sometimes it's a single topic, sometimes a grab-bag of current events, sometimes a special guest. I've learned and laughed a lot.
I disagree with Jonah in a lot of ideological areas. I listen to him more than other podcast because I like to have my biases challenged by an intelligent, thoughtful voice who, most importantly, NEVER makes an argument in bad faith. Unlike almost every other commentator, Jonah seems constitutionally incapable of saying anything he doesn’t fully believe. Hey, Sarah Isgur, please take notes. If Jonah has one downfall, it’s a blind spot where he trusts that his friends’ opinions are in similar good faith. Jonah, Baseball Crank does NOT believe everything he says the way you do…
My go-to conservative podcast. Jonah’s deep dives into conservatism and today’s political landscape are always so illuminating and thought provoking. I often re-listen to episodes to solidify ideas he’s teased out. Follow and listen!
Jonah’s thoughtful commentary on politics and current events are well reasoned and helpful. I sometimes disagree with his positions, but I’m thankful to have this podcast help me think through the issues. If you want a podcast that is conservative, thought out, funny at times, and not trying to chase the base, give it a listen.
This podcast may be called the Remnant, but I’m a new listener. Love listening to Jonah riff on topics of our times as I walk my dog on Saturday mornings. I have to imagine more and more people are tuning in.
Jonah has an incredibly engaging personality that makes this podcast both educational and entertaining (in a nerdy sort of way, but I like it). He brings forth a wealth of knowledge and experience from his years in DC and time spent abroad that make his views properly informed. He also has a wide network of individuals from both sides of the aisle that he frequently brings on The Remnant which makes for thoughtful conversations that explore various areas of expertise. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, conservative, right of center voice Jonah is a great one to add to your arsenal!
Excellent episode regarding the institution of Marriage. When Brad was presenting the situation in which the woman is working, but has to deal with a man who spends his time gaming, or otherwise non-supportive behavior, I immediately began humming the signature guitar part from “Fast Car”.
I was looking for a conservative podcast that could help me better understand the conservative position on issues. While I may not agree with every position or perspective this show takes, I really apprecaite hearing perspectives other than my own. I think it helps evolve my own understanding on issues and appreciate the shared discourse here.
This was perhaps my favorite episode of The Remnant. The dignity of work is central to my worldview. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this podcast. Two comments. When I was deployed in 2003, Armed Forces Network played “Ground Hog Day” over and over, all day long on Ground Hog Day. Not as funny as the producers thought. Second, I can’t believe you talked about “Ground Hog Day,” at length, without mentioning Andie MacDowell.
Jonah discusses the political issues of the day from a conservative perspective, but he specializes in understanding the political ideas that shapes people’s positions, and will go into great depth explaining the history of these ideas, their consequences, and his own reasoning behind why he personally accepts or rejects these ideas. The decades he spent as a conservative pundit have given him firsthand knowledge of right wing thinking, while his knowledge of left wing ideologies and their histories is near encyclopedic. Productive discussions around political issues are only possible if opponents understand each other’s views, which is why this podcast has attracted listeners from both sides of the political spectrum. This podcast will give you the tools to have these conversations, regardless of what views you currently have.
Another reviewer, who gave this podcast 2 stars, did so in part because they thought Jonah claimed Charles CW Cooke was a fraud and a grifter. I just wanted to point out that Jonah was referring to Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA, not Charlie Cooke. Charlie Cooke is awesome, and Jonah mentions his awesomeness often on The Remnant. Charlie Kirk on the other hand is a fraud and a grifter. Just wanted to clear that up. Anyway, this is my favorite podcast.
You bet. Jonah is tired today too. It’s early or he hasn’t had enough sleep or the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet. Wait, occasionally, Jonah is a little hyper because he’s had too much coffee or Trump did something good. Jonah, you sound tired.
I’d be interested in Jonah’s take on the Stars Wars debate going on in The Corner.
After listening to Jonah’s discussion with Dan Crenshaw, I’m convinced he should conduct a “Lunch-and-Learn” session in the House Members’ Dining Room.
That was interesting. If he taught college history, I would go to class. I would also watch the video of that class a second time.
For Frances Dearnly’s conversation. I’ve always enjoyed his insights on Ukraine the Latest (which I follow thanks to Jonah) and it was good to hear his background and his moral clarity.
I love this podcast and I listen to each one. I really appreciate Jonah doing it. I love everything you do. I enjoy your interviews, but I think these solo podcasts are the best.
Although most episodes are delightful- this one was a particularly insightful conversation. Thanks Tim and Jonah
Might be my favorite opinion guy
Loved it. Writing a story just for fun and wanted some conspiracies. Got it here. Saved episode for replay
Fascinating and important episode.
I very much enjoyed the discussion with David Brooks. Thank you.
He is 80, will soon turn 81. You should know this. You’ve made this mistake a few times recently, find out about these things before repeating them.
I endorse the idea of an opinion blog on The Dispatch so long as the posts remain posts and not articles. I don’t know what the word limit should be but it should be an order of magnitude shorter than a typical Andy McCarthy Corner “post”.
Jonah’s The Remnant seamlessly combines punditry, historical analysis, and philosophy from a conservative yet humanistic viewpoint. His insights infused with historical context provides clarity on today’s events, encouraging deeper reflection: what’s the end goal here?
I seriously look forward to this podcast whenever it comes out. Have listened to 100% of every one released since day 1. I prefer the ones that focus on origin of conservatism and political theory. I also LOVE the Saturday release of Jonah’s solo “G-File” musings. One negative: I miss Jack Butler!
Enjoy all all the guests, Chris is my fav! I am from Houston, really enjoyed the Texas podcast!
Being a never-Trumper is fine by me, but his lack of any pushback against Nichols for his ludicrous assertions of authoritarianism while turning a blind eye to what we’re seeing in real time makes listening to Jonah’s punditry increasingly tiresome. The ending line may prove to be prophetic.
Updated text at the bottom. Update from 0 stars to 5. Well done. Suggestion, Observation, Appreciation, and Method for Easy Improvement in Two Weeks or Less: Jonah, if you would like to level-up your work, stop with the filler words. A silent pause is better. Silence is a positive and filler words are negatives. I’ve reduced my filler word usage to 0-to-1 per 20-minutes of speaking from 15 or more across 3 minutes. On your solo podcasts, I repeatedly track more than one such vile detractor per sentence. They detract from your presentation so as to turn good work into bad. I’m giving 1 star because, although I love most of your work, I judge this as the best way to get you this message. This is NOT because I could not bring myself to make it past the Janet Lau (sp?) reference where, goodness, were more than half of your words that you did not read directly filler words? . . . How to Eliminate This Hurdle to Your Success: 1.) Buy a whistle or a “ring for service” bell 2.) 3x across two weeks, give a 2-3 minute free-form talk on any topic in front of 2-3 friends whom you don’t want to fail in front of 3.) have one friend you trust in charge of signaling with the device in step 1 EVERY TIME you use a filler word After just one session, and if they catch just 3 or more filler words, then this exercise will reduce your filler word usage on solo podcasts by 1/4 to 1/2, but you will *notice* 4x to 5x more than you did before. The next two sessions are for recalibration on noticing your own usage of these terms. Practice a little pause when you sense a filler word and notice other speakers pauses where some would insert filler words. A trip to the dollar store, a few friends you’d be a little embarrassed to fail in front of, and 14* minutes across 2 weeks, and you will improve your future lifetime earnings by no less than 10%. Slay this dragon. - Just A Guy Wishing You Well Update: You corrected this issue, if not to the point of perfection, past the point of good enough. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration on important topics, and thank you for leveling-up your game.

The punditry hurts the ears. The hyperbole sounds like the ends justify the means kind of argument. This argument is leveled at both red and blue ties. “Your hyperbole is going to be outmatched by my hyperbole.” Ygch. More of a sound than a word. Civil discourse without the sky is falling would be much more interesting. Both candidates are the worst in memory. Certainly our great country can and should do better.
I love listening to Jonah. He is a thoughtful and sincere person- a rarity in political pundits. His writing is as informative as it is fun to read- and the podcast is just as great to listen to.
Your analysis really helps me navigate current events and the media landscape that has gone mad. Can you sometimes go on impassioned tangents over an hour? It’s your show-I nearly always indulge. Hour + is fine. Thanks for the insights. Also, if you haven’t tried it - Powers, John’s Lane, single pot still. Keep up the good work.
