Awesome to listen to and relate to as a Mexican raised in America always looking for a place to fit in. Selena continues to be an icon for the young people to look up to and make it happen! Thanks for your voice!
I love how this is not only about Selena but also how we can relate to and learn from her story. Loved it
You speaking to my soul Maria/Mary🇲🇽💙 (therapeutic too)!!! 1997 Chelly thanks you from the bottom of her heart
Such a beautiful podcast. You neeeeddddd to listen. You won’t regret it.
This podcast has brought me to tears numerous times- from reliving La Reyna’s life to hearing personal stories of not being “Hispanic enough” or being rejected for not speaking Spanish with a Hispanic background- the history hits so hard, and I am so grateful for this, as a 3rd generation Mexican American who doesn’t speak Spanish for reasons stated in this pod. Thank you for doing this. Wow.
This is a great podcast, with much insight into life of Selena. The reason for 4 stars is because around episode 5, the podcast turns from being about Selena to becoming about hosts exploration of personal feelings surrounding race in her family. Episodes 6-8 could’ve been one episode if it was about Selena.
Por favor, publique más. Me encanta tu podcast.
As a lifelong fluent Spanglish speaker, lo aprecio mucho.
I learned so much from this! From the first episode, hearing about Maria’s experiences had me in tears. Her storytelling is so delicate, so honest. Esto podcast es perfecto para alguien aprendiendo español, como yo, porque el episodes in inglés & español. Me gusta el entrevistas con inventadas. What a beautiful piece of art!
loved the episode on selena and race !
Just started to listen and oh my what a work of art!! The beauty of Selena shines on every Latina/o, as well as Hispanics, in this country!! Thank you Maria for your work and dedication to this project, it speaks volumes of our culture and heritage while accurately showcasing Latin Americans living in the United States. I remember watching her on TV in Univision as a kid and feeling the tragedy as if it were the year it occurred. I was born in 1998, after Selena’s death, still no different than 1995 she was still honored and celebrated for her life, achievements, and contributions. We continue to mourn her passing and no year has been different since the year she departed. Selena’s legacy lives forever!! Tremendous love for your work!! Thank you!! 💜💜💜💜💜 -Miriam, a Mexican-American proud Latina, born and raised in Southern California.
I’ve never related more to a podcast. I am a first generation Mexican-American. I grew up 45 minutes from El Paso and spent many weekends in Juarez visiting family or going to the clubs. This podcast spoke to me, moved me. I felt as though I was having a conversation with a good friend. I highly recommend this!
Of course I don’t leave reviews, but Anything For Selenas ! Once i got to the “Big Booty” part is than when I understood the entanglement of the hispanic/latin culture. Every episode was right on point in expressing why we feel a gravitational pull towards Selena because she was “The People” ella era la “Rasa”. The episode about Race even struck me more ! Beautifully worded Maria Garcia, with your stanza-self. Thank you ! 💜🏁 We need an interview with Marcella Quintanilla. Ahh man, truly will be awesome !
I knew about Selena but didn’t know much about her. Thank you for telling her story and for educating me on how important Selena was to Latina identity and for first generation Latinos. Really enjoyed this podcast.
I love the personal stories and the vivid nature imagery. Being from El Paso and Juarez, I can warmly relate to the ethos of this podcast. The insights about Selena and culture are powerful and profound.
Found this on “best of” page and decided to give it a listen. I thought it would have been cheesy but I was surprisingly pleased. I was addicted after the first episode, finished it within a week & shared it with everyone I could think of. I love the perspective
Love this podcast!
I’d listened to AFS in English on my own and laughed, sobbed, felt that magic thing in your chest where you feel interconnected with history and the breathing living world in front of you. BUT, I just relistened to the Spanish version with my mom and we were blown away. I just wanna compliment your poetry, your candor, wanna send a virtual hug to your mami, and to tell you how restorative it’s been for my relationship with my mami. There are so few things my moms and I can share because most media I consume is in English while hers is in Spanish and I appreciate the work you did to make this as accessible a family affair as possible. MIL GRACIAS❣️
I didn’t know what to expect because Selena is written about and her image is used so frequently (mainly in the Latino community). Mostly everything that I have read, Watched, and seen about Selena has basically the same storyline. I felt that this podcast brought forward so many underlying topics and issues in the latino community that need to be talked about while still focusing on Selena. I was amazed at how much I could relate and how amazingly expressive she brought fort these topics. I felt this was in-depth analytical yet memorable podcast to listen to and it definitely shows a different narrative of Selena which I love. I am so happy I found this podcast, it’s ben almost a year since I’ve listened to this and I am still at awe about it. It’s incredible!
Thank you for putting into words so many of the emotions that many of us felt as little girls growing up as children of immigrants who lost an idol.
I loved this podcast so much!
This podcast filled- and broke- my heart. Beautifully written and produced. I missed the whole Selena experience- I am an older white woman. The tenderness and tenacity of the writer and her idol moved me deeply. I feel I got a window into a world I knew only vaguely and at a vast remove. My thanks to the creator - who opened my heart and eyes.

As a fan of Selena from back in the day this podcast shed light on so many things. Selena would have been honored to hear this podcast. Tears come easily when I listen to this show. Mil gracias a Maria
Late to the party but am enjoying this SO much. The narrator & storytellers are so relatable. Maria & her team do a fantastic job of showing the cultural & historical impact Selena made in her short life, and the historical & cultural influences surrounding Selena & many Mexican Americans’ experiences (varied as they are and perhaps akin to other minority or immigrant experiences) in the US and elsewhere. IF you’re looking for salacious drama (see negative comments), look elsewhere. Very clearly these women are here to give you a beautiful love letter to Selena’s life & the many ways her legacy lives on. Bravo.

I wanted to hear more about Selena and less about the journalist. I gave up half way through. What about her husband and forbidden love affair. Didn’t she have a child? What about the woman who killed her? Sorry if that eventually made it in podcast, but bored after while. Thx
Good
This woman can paint a picture and exude a smell with her words. So personal and yet so accessible. One of my favorite long-form podcasts EVER!
Thank you for creating and gifting us this amazing podcast. I laughed and cried while I listened. To think that 25 years later she is still loved, missed and how beautiful & timeless she is. Thank you Maria - you definitely did her legacy justice
Hands down, my favorite podcast. I have listened to this a handful of times and I learn something new each time. This is the only podcast that has made me ugly cry. This is also a podcast you can listen to with your family and have some deep conversations.
The Selena and Chris episode struck a different chord for me. This podcast is truly a work of art. Her story is told in the most unfiltered and beautiful way. I see some reviews about the speaker not talking enough about Selena and just relating everything to her personal life. However, I think it’s beautiful to see sides of Selena no one has seen and how we as adults can relate. Selena was human. This podcast gives us the opportunity to view Selena beyond the amazing singer and performer she was, it lets us see her as a human being who had struggles despite her success, who broke down due to her troubles, who made mistakes, and did a great job with not letting that negative energy be brought to others. 10/10 would recommend this podcast ♥️
This podcast is amazing because it isn’t another in-depth look at Selena’s life. It is how Selena’s legacy and her achievements affected her fans. The narrator does an amazing job at interjecting her POV during the time and her experiences as well
I knew little to nothing about Selena before listening, and this podcast is kicking off my education! Super well made and interesting.
I was disappointed —- surprised this is so popular. I thought it was going to be a bio and analysis of Selena’s career but the first episode and a half are just about the narrator’s life and how much she loves Selena. I was pretty bored so I’m going to quit. It’s clear Selena’s joyous self-acceptance helped the narrator come to terms with her own status as both Mexican and American; I see how this podcast may really resonate with people balancing two cultures and heritages within them, but I wanted to know more about the artist, Selena, herself. I guess I’ll check out the movies.
The topic drew me in and the way the reporter wove the storyline between her life and the things she shared in common with Selena was absolutely beautiful. It was interesting to hear from different people who remember Selena’s peak and the marks she left on the culture as well as people who knew her best in her life. I truly enjoyed this podcast.
The focus on Selena was good but the host always made it go back to her life story. I can understand maybe in the beginning and move on but it always circles back to her. I had to listen at 1.5 speed just to get through. Sounded like she was as ill or in pain. Maybe it’s just her inflection but ugh no.
I love everything about this podcast! I discovered it through an episode of Code Switch, another podcast I love. Maria Garcia relates so well the lens of Selena to her life, identity and being American. It is truly, truly well done and very thought provoking.
This is so beautiful. So nicely done.❤️❤️❤️❤️
A 64 year old WASP, I’m ashamed I did know who Selena was….but I do now, and I have learned much more from this incredible show. I listen to both languages, it’s so good. I only found it trying to learn more about Tejano music. Recently this genre inspired me to buy a Hohner Panther after many years torturing pianos :)
Maria and her team do an amazing job of sharing the life of Selena in a way that looks at the history of Mexican-Americans in the 80s-90s while reflecting on the 2nd and 3rd generation Americans who lived in Texas and the social impacts they faced. Her Spanglish episode was tough and emotional for me as I relate so much to Kristin Torres (my name is also Kristin). Thank you for the focus of belonging, identity, and love while sharing your story.
Made me cry and laugh! Helped me walk down memory lane my deconstructed the ways in which Selena has impacted us personally, been part of our family’s joy and sadness… our growth. A wonderful and culturally important and impactful narrative. Gracias Maria Garcia!!

Wow, a refreshing point of view on the icon, Selena. By taking a look at the Mexican American experience, this podcast touches on history, research, and personal reference. I’m finding me again in this podcast. Muchas gracias!
This healed my soul and it this was done with such love for Selena
I came across this Podcast after finishing the 2 season of Selena on Netflix. I needed more Selena. This Podcast was a beautiful surprise. Thank you for connecting me to my culture through this thoughtful and provocative lens. Keep going it’s necessary and important work you are doing!
