This wasn’t the worst podcast I have listened to but it’s pretty low on my list. Extremely redundant. Way too many ads. I feel like the host reminded me of somebody reliving their glory days. The tough chick act is lame.
I don’t know if these are rushed or what. They pick big topics and only focus on a small area. Most episodes miss a lot of context, are heavily repetitive and do a disservice to the story they are telling
I enjoyed learning about the LA punk scene from this podcast. As a true crime podcast, it missed the mark. I also wish Alan Sachs had hosted. Penelope was annoying and referenced her work and relationships far too often.
Such an interesting life Peter Ivers led. Such a tragic ending. Absolutely loved all the interviews with punk legends. Didn’t realize all the music Peter contributed to some of my favorite films. I’ll definitely be renewing my subscription to Night Flight. The only thing I can add is that iHeart is about the most unpunk thing I can think of. Definitely recommend this podcast!
The story and love everyone has for Peter emanates through the every episode! Learning about the insight of punk LA was so interesting. I also love the narrator
I really enjoyed this podcast, and you can really feel the love everyone had/has for Peter. It was also very interesting to learn about him, his influence, and the underground LA punk scene. Although it was well written, it really lacks an investigative journalistic perspective. I know they wanted to honor Peter and not have the podcast be super crimey, but it leaves a lot of reporting that still needs to be done in my opinion. For example, an easy way to rule out David Jove is if he had an alibi. The guy was always around people. If he was at the cave all night, that would probably be pretty easy to prove and rule him out as a suspect. His possible alibi is never discussed. Also, a journalist probably would have figured out a way to get the file from LAPD or at least more info out of them. I just feel like I was left with a lot of questions due to the lack of significant reporting outside of interviewing the people who knew Peter.
…unfortunately I have little patience for the volume of ads and pulled the plug 6 minutes into the second episode. The ads made it difficult to focus on the details, actually I never found any flow to the show. Unlistenable to me…
This true crime story has interesting characters. I liked the time period of Los Angeles during the early 80s in the underground punk scene. For the length of each episode there are too many ads. It would have been better if the episodes were longer and consolidated down to five.
Thank you for celebrating Peter’s life and helping more people discover his music. He was an incredible person, who was dearly loved. We miss him every day.
I love everything about this show: the host, the story, especially the content warnings!
It’s almost utterly destroyed by the unending commercials. So ironic considering the era it covers
A great punk song is succinct... gets to the point - no flab or filler. This podcast, on the other hand, was stretched too thin. A great/interesting topic (done really well, overall) but what could've been a lean 6 episode series they milked into 10 episodes. (Still worth a listen, for sure.)
It was a good story. That said, I know you have to make money, but this would have been much better as five longer-but-tighter episodes. Every episode seemed thematically slack, and couldn’t really build up a head of steam until three to four minutes of ads derailed everything.
I’ve never listened to a pod where more time was allocated to the commercials than the content. I won’t even bother finishing this one. It’s obnoxious.
With all the true crime podcast out there. I’m not sure why these people thought that 50% of the podcast needed to be ads. I thought about quitting the podcast multiple times due to this but since I am near the end of good content right now doing a home project I continued. Otherwise a somewhat entertaining pod. Probably not worth the constant skipping of ads though unless you’re slumming it
This is a interesting and very well done podcast. But having 23 minute episodes with five minutes being ads is so far from the message of the podcast. These are supposed to be people who are against the man and in a scene that was against capitalism. And yet this podcast is only about making money. Make your episodes longer with less ads. STOP being a sell out.
The amount of ads was absurd. And based off the reviews I’ve read, I am not alone in that thought. I really loved the podcast other than that. It felt so insensitive and garish. Penelope Spheeris slays though. So stoked to hear her and hope to hear more of her in the future. With less ads.
However, it took too many episodes to really get through the meat of the story and there are far too many commercials. I would've liked to have seen longer episodes that would give more of the story episode.
I have NEVER listened to a podcast with this many ads. Ruined the entire experience. Even Penelope Spheeris should be embarrassed by this level of sell out. A moderately cool story but not enough time to tell it.
I’m a big fan of the early LA punk scene (X, Gun Club, Weirdos, etc.), and of Penelope Spheres’ films. Spheres makes a great podcast host as well. I wasn’t familiar with Peter Ivers before listening to this, but figured the podcast would offer another interesting glimpse into that period of LA history... It does, and Peter Ivers’ story is fascinating and tragic. The podcast will appeal to true crime enthusiasts as well as anyone interested in the music and culture of the era. My sincere condolences to Ms. Spheres, and to any of Peter’s friends who might read this.
I wanted to love this podcast, I thought it would be in the same vain as I was Never There, 80s vibes with history I can only hear about and a mystery. Instead the host is horrible her off hand remarks and opinions do not add to the story.
An eye-open tale of an one of kind personality who helped open my eyes and ears. I remember discovering both ‘Night Flight’ and ‘New Wave Theater’ as a tween at the time and wallowing in the creative mess that these shows had at a time when you had to really dig to find the off-the-beaten path culture that wasn’t on the radio and daring to embrace it.
I was slowly discovering punk music and culture and these oases to a fairly raw recruit were rays of lights in the mostly dull cultural glare of the early 1980’s. You either conformed or took on the risk of swimming against the tide, with constant risk ridicule and sometimes physical peril.
Peter Ivers with ‘New Wave Theater’ was like a kooky uncle who you didn’t quite know what to make of, but we’re glad to have that weekly visit via the gotta-turn-in-or-record-it-or-miss-it analog days. I didn’t like all the music I heard, but I loved the attitude and fearlessness hosted by a clearly unique individual. I loved his monologues even if I could only grasp small crumbs.
While later I found my cultural path more clearly in the years that followed, I wondered what happened to that odd man. I don’t remember when I first heard that he was murdered, the fact that his cruel death has never been solved did and didn’t surprise me. I’m so happy to hear this podcast - hosted by another legend, Penelope Spheeris.
I’m a firm believer in getting those unknown people who have fallen between the cracks and whose influence is either hidden or unrecognized their due.
Thanks for the podcast!
What a tragic loss. I’ve never heard of Peters Ivers before. He deserves recognition and justice. I love his music of free rein. An amazing artist not to be forgotten. Thank you for bringing this story to the forefront. I’m reading everything I can about Peter and listening to all the music I can find.
Great show about the Acid king.
Too many ads that don’t match the show’s voice or feel or anything really. It’s a bummer but iHeart does this with all their shows. :(
But the podcast is great!
Huge fan of this podcast! Fantastic insight into punk and counterculture history as well as a very interesting look into a true crime story. Loving that this mashes all my favorite things into one show. Looking forward to future episodes!
I can't get enough of Peter and the acid King, not just a compelling true crime stories, but a vivid insight into the full spectrum of communities and scenes of LA during late 70's and early 80's. Keep up the good work, can't wait for the next episode
Part of enjoying a podcast is being able to tolerate the host’s voice. Sadly, listening to this host is akin to listening to a drunk old lady. And the content? L…truly a lesson in propping someone up (RIP).
I am a doctoral level advanced practice nurse, I have taught Nursing for over 15 years, and I was born and raised in Florida. This podcast is completely blowing my mind in its depth, breadth, and riveting revelations!! So much intrigue, corruption, deception! So many heroes! If this was fictional I’d probably stop- too outlandish! But wait- it’s not only ALL TRUE but also STILL happening??!! Now I can’t stop listening. Ever . When does Season 2 drop? When do you tell the story of utter ecocide perpetrated by Big Sugar? This is an utterly stunning production!
