I first heard this story when Brittany was interviewed on Wicked Words. I’d never heard the story before and Brittany does a masterful job of sharing the story of the Peterson family and who they were as people and a family.
Great story. I like that those who experienced the actual crime were featured via live interviews. Also, many formal historical articles, court docs, and police documents are read & discussed in their original script.
Re the complaints about the voice: I wish the critics would try to acknowledge that preference plays a large role in this assessment. I have gave up many podcasts because of the narrator. If so, my complaint is usually that the voice is either monotonous or insincere/disingenuous. I was happy with the narrator on this podcast.
One of my personal preferences is that the narrator sound like a ‘real person’ i. e., speaks as if we were having a personal conversation. That was the impression I got here, so it worked for me. I did not find it monotone - and I can be picky.
The one tip I offer to the narrator: beta blockers. Her voice did reminded me of myself. Public speaking can cause anxiety (obviously). But for a small percentage of folks, this anxiety causes shakey voice; this then, might be mistaken for emotion. The narrator seemed to have this issue so I’d just say beta blockers solved the problem for me!
I don’t think there was a better person to tell the tale of the Peterson than a family member. Thank you to the witnesses who shared their stories even though it was tough. This case is shocking particularly in the randomness of it.
Now I do have to admit, the host’s way of speaking can be… grating. (I actually switched to another podcast 5 mins into episode 1 as I was driving a long trip and didn’t think I could take it. I finished the podcast at another time.) There’s lots of vocal fry(?) and flatness when speaking. I also picked up on some shakiness halfway through that sounded like nerves or almost crying. Unfortunately it is jarring and takes away from the story.
If the host is reading this, I think you have a good voice and do great research and writing! Some vocal coaching might add some extra polish to future podcasts!
The success of this podcast really underlines the value of having the right people tell the story. Rather than an ogling look at a horrible crime, the creator—because of her connection to and respect for the family—does a wonderful job of highlighting the heartbreak of the event, the failure of the system, and the triumph of the people who survived it. Truly well done, well researched, appropriately spare and respectful. Highly recommend!
I’m sure the story is well done but I can’t get past the woman’s voice and valley accent. It’s like she watched every episode of the kardashians and mimics their speech pattern.
This is so well done. I kind of wish it were longer but it’s already so perfect. I mostly just wanted more of the way this podcast is done. It’s got great narration, real interviews, historical audio, and more. Love it!
Brittany is an absolutely fantastic narrator for this podcast and her proximity to the victims makes her very compelling and you can feel the emotion so clearly in her tone. While I enjoy true crime, so many podcasts don’t consider the families and impact of the crimes, being disrespectful of both victims and their loved ones. This podcast is the exact opposite. You can hear just how much care was put into this podcast by the production team as well as all of their guests. So much emotion and effort went into the creation of this fantastic account of such a horrendous crime.
Beautifully done and I can’t wait to see what comes next from this production team!
I’m touched by the sensitive nature the narrator as she tells this horrific tale. Thank you for sharing the ongoing issue of mental illness and our struggle as a society in how to best deal with it. Thank you for keeping me engaged. Well done.
Anxious to listen to more podcasts in the future. Researched, written and produced very thoroughly and thoughtfully. The presentation was equally outstanding.
This story is deeply sad and impactful, but the podcast is produced with the consent of the family and upholds their dignity and privacy throughout in a way that other “true crime” podcasts should learn from. Well done.
This was a straight forward account of a horrific crime that I haven't heard of, which, at this point, doesn't happen often. Truly enjoyed in a heart breaking way.
The narrator is insufferable to listen to! It’s a really interesting story, but VERY hard to listen because the narrator is flat, boring, monotone…..BORING!
I loved hearing this story from the year of my birth. It was so tragic, but we’ll presented. The family was respected in the telling of their story. This was well researched and presented .
Despite the subject I truly enjoyed this story. This podcast was crafted with love and care. Very well done! My heart aches for this sweet family. Such a shame that the system failed and in turn caused such a tragedy.
This is a great story. No idea why some very petty people wrote line after line about her voice. I guess those can’t do just sit around and judge. The podcast is wonderful. Will listen to narrator again if she does another one.
By far one of the best podcasts I’ve listened to in a long time. The way that this story is delivered is exactly right, considering the grim details of this tragedy. Clear, concise, emotional and detailed yet respectful and considerate of the family and the interviewees.
Highly recommend, 5 stars. Good job, Brittany.
What a horrible crime against this big loving family just doing life.
Presentation of the story felt so personal as it was. My heart went out to the two remaining daughters.
I started to listen to this and I thought “ the narrators voice is a bit off” . I thought it was just me until I read the reviews. I agree with other reviews about the narrator . Interesting subject but the narrator needs coaching to really bring this story alive . I think with voice coaching this narrator could do great things . Unfortunately I couldn’t get past the first episode due to the narrators voice . Not that’s it’s bad it’s just so off it really distracts from the story . I tried to struggle through but just couldn’t do it . I give this a three stars cause the over all production, story , and execution of the podcast is good but the voice narration needs work .
Easy, interesting, quick listen.
The narrator is fine, she has a personal connection with the story, so maybe this is a one off podcast for her, either way, it’s a good true crime story to listen to in an afternoon.
I am enjoying the podcast. I think the narrator is doing a great job, the only issue I have is the music. It’s kind of awkward how upbeat it is compared to the content. 😬
