I am SO grateful the algorithm sent me to The ADHD Dudes! As a parent with ADHD, I have been all over the place in parenting my daughter with ADHD. This is the evidence based, authentic advice I have been looking for and I only wish I had found it years ago.
These guys are talking about my son. Every. Single. Thing they say is about my child. I’m binging this podcast and started the Scaffolding Better Behavior course, hoping that I can figure out how to support my 12 yr old son through middle school. I wish the ADHD Guys would come speak to our school on a teacher work day.
Episode 13 for “learned helplessness” should come with a disclaimer. I truly hope people seek other advice outside of this. While in theory this might work “not being their child’s frontal lobe” or anticipating their child using “every trick in the book” to get their way and manipulate is kind of rotten way of viewing a child who struggles with executive dysfunction. I suffered in silence for the earlier half of my 40 years in life due to adults framing my behaviors this way. As if I was premeditated , calculating and manipulative. I strong-armed my way into success on my own but not without loss of time and having to rebuild self esteem on my own and having a lot of bad life experiences. There are many qualified child psychologists (PHDs) out there who can understand the nuances between each and every person regarding this diagnosis and what comorbidities might be overlapping. First and foremost , love your kids , be real with them and try to get at what are truly crippling concerns for them. I experienced a tremendous amount of shame with my struggle to be on time , finish my homework on time etc. To the point where I skipped classes entirely to avoid this shame. Fortunately I do not have learning disabilities and I loved learning on my own. I would consider myself self taught. I was able to self learn, write papers and pass exams but as we know that is not enough to pass grades. Participation , homework and being on time were my weaknesses. I hear a lot of focus on how to handle screen addiction , which makes sense since we are in the midst of the “iPad kids” generation. It all sounds like advice that people want to hear. They also seem to speak to a very specific socioeconomic demographic. Not sure how self aware the hosts are or if they care. I am sure their advice works for some but this is a complex disorder that exists on-a-spectrum. One size fits all is a great selling point but in actuality this “tough love” approach will not work for everyone. There are many parental personalities out there and one person’s idea of what tough love is might vary wildly and perhaps in damaging ways then the next parent. If you can, save your pennies to seek a licensed child psychologist PhD. Reminder , girls experience is different from boys - ideally the nuance should be identified with every topic covered here. Good Luck.
Our child was only recently diagnosed with ADHD, and I’m so grateful that I found these guys. Their description of ADHD and their advice is all spot-on. Thank you, ADHD Guys, for what you do to support this community!
I really like this pod and have found all the info on here, as well as ADHD Dude incredibly useful. I am hoping there will be more of a nod to girls with ADHD in the future as I feel the material leans “boy”. Though plenty useful for “kids” with ADHD in general.
I really appreciate ADHD information that is focused on teaching parents and helping children develop into adults who can function and thrive. I’m a medical doctor (not specialized in neuropsych or development) and I get so much out of this and recommend it to everyone.
It’s been a few years of ups and downs with my 13 year old daughter. When the light bulb went on that it could be ADHD, we got to work and got a diagnosis and are now working on how to bring out the best of our daughter. Episode 5 could have been a synopsis of exactly how my daughter acts and thinks and my mind was blown as to how accurate it portrayed her…but then gave tools to use to get to work to NOT ACCEPT THE NO. Time to push these kids into being great, it’s all in there. Thank you for a research based podcast where it’s not all fluff and talking about our feelings.
My 15 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD among other things. These podcast episodes have been the most helpful of anything I have read or heard on the topic of parenting a kid with ADHD! Thank you so much!
This podcast needs to be listened to not just by parents with ADHD but all parents. This information is priceless and should be mandatory for any parent with young kids. Great knowledge and evidence to back all arguments up. Great job guys. Keep em coming.
These two gents provide some of the only advice I have found effective with my daughter. It has been so helpful.
Would you guys mind doing an episode on what to consider when choosing a school for kids with ADHD? Perhaps even with those who have a little Asperger’s as well.
Finally good, practical, research-backed advice about parenting a child with ADHD! My husband and I both listen to this podcast and love it. There is a lack of practical tips out there, and this a much needed podcast!
Finally some actual and useful help on parenting adhd kids. I wish I knew this info long ago. Practical straightforward, no nonsense and effective.Thank you!
Really enjoy this information. I have a step son that probably went through all the wrong therapy’s - his mom just dong her best.
Hope you have an episode on young adults starting college.
Just listened to my first episode on the “truth “While I liked the emphasis on teaching resiliency and placing high expectations on kids, I didn’t hear any good evidence to back up what appeared to be a claim that a significant percentage of late diagnoses of autism are inaccurate. That may be the case and I personally don’t know if the research on it, but the hosts offered only a couple of anecdotal examples and personal opinions. It’s an important topic that I think deserves more serious discussion then was provided on this podcast
I’m so grateful to hear this in a mainstream environment. I think you guys are carrying Russell Barkley’s torch and the world will be better for it. I am so grateful for the scientific approach to managing ADHD.
I’m so glad you have a podcast going! My son with ADHD is about to graduate from
High school and it’s like you’re speaking right to me. I teach elementary school and am telling everyone about it!
Just listened to the episode on emotional dysregulation and love the practical advice for some of us parents that are at our wits end! The no non-sense approach is what I need at times alongside remaining connected to my child at all times.
Can’t wait to listen to more. I already have a subscription to Ryan’s parent coaching and now need to look into McLeod’s website for executive coaching.
I have been following ADHD Dude for years and share his platforms as resources with my son’s teachers and with any friends with recently diagnosed children. We’ve been working with Mike’s practice for awhile. Between the two of them, we’ve finally found the approach we spent years looking for to support our son with ADHD. Previously, it had always felt like we were encouraged to enable our son; their realistic approach of understanding the underlying reason of a behavior coupled with the emphasis that we need to prepare our kids for real life was exactly what we needed. I’m so glad they have a podcast to continue sharing their expertise with the world!
Ryan and Mike are doing amazing work clarifying myths and sharing evidence based information about ADHD. I have learned so much from each respectively and was thrilled when I heard about this podcast. It did not disappoint. I especially loved the episode on resilience. Thank you for what you’re doing to support parents!
Excited and relieved to hear realistic conversation and novel suggestions for ADHD children outside of medication and talk therapy. Highly recommend-started implementing immediately. Thank you!
Thank you! I had never even heard of your work and in one random coincidence ran into your FB page which linked to the podcast and it is absolutely amazing! It is clear, honest, and exactly what I needed to hear. You give hope and direction. Looking forward to continue learning from your podcast!
I could not be happier that the two of you teamed up and started this podcast format. How you explain adhd and strategies to help my son is beyond helpful. It gives me the tools to help my son help himself, while fully understanding what is going between his ears.
As a parent of an ADHD kiddo and a Peds OT l, I’ve been following you both for a while now. So excited you are teaming up. I already can’t wait to pass on the two episodes I’ve listened to— soooo relevant and accessible to families!! Thank you!!
