Mars Hill Bible Church Teachings

Reviews For Mars Hill Bible Church Teachings

I've been following this for some time, harking back to when I went there once during it's early days of being a massive church. Rob Bell was great, Shane was very very good, and Kent was fantastic. I love that different perspectives are explored rather than just the typical mainstream Christian approach, and yet it's rooted deeply in Biblical scholarship, and always heavy on love. Excited to see where the new pastor takes it.
I love community that is Mars Hill. While I am not an active congregant (I listen from Chattanooga, TN) I have benefited immensely from all that you do. You've inspired me to produce a new kind of church in my community—a church that follows the way of Jesus, leaving people covered in the dust of their rabbi.

Love It!
Thank you mhbc for making these available to the greater community outside your walls, city, state...
Great podcast! Good sound teaching, very educational.
People need to understand the bible was meant to be discussed and researched taking stuff out of context and calling it gospel is wrong ...people need to take personal responsibility for the things they choose to believe as absolute (religion) these teachings from this podcast give you a way to do that I live in Texas I listen to this because it is Freeing ....
This podcast is not 'Love Wins'. To those who've experienced such a strong reaction to the book, I strongly doubt you would suffer through even one teaching, let alone a whole series of teachings on the same subject. And to those who speak of universalism and this part of Christ's bride being a conduit of it; you are off your subject. Speak not of things you know little about, namely philosophy. To Mars Hill Bible Church, when I had concluded to end my own life, thank you for telling of the G-d who loves and the Christ who would give a new self and way of life to one who needed so much grace. Peace be with you.
I've listened to this podcast for years and can honestly say that sermons seldom make me think as much as these teachings do. Every week I'm left with ideas to meditate on. This podcast has literally made the difference in me staying with my faith when things really sucked in my life. I'm so thankful to serve a God that give such good gifts like this podcast
I have gone to Mars Hill, seen, and heard the teachings there, and here is what I have to say: None of the preachers there claim to know everything there is to know, they speak with the hopes that the words coming out of their mouths reach people in their intended manor. Seeing as how none of them are God, there is no guarantee that they will be understood perfectly. Those that speak the hurtful and rude comments must be misunderstanding Mars Hills' intentions. Hopefully those listening take time after the teachings to reflect and let God in to help them understand in the way he intends you to. For example: a post below makes reference to a comment Rob has made that no God can be a good God if he sends people to hell. That can be taken many ways, but my interpretation has come to mean God sets up his expectations of us in a manor that always allows us a way back to him. However, we will always have free will, and if we choose not to take the path to him, he does not SEND us to hell, we choose. Rob is not perfect and neither are you, and therein lies the problem. Please don't tear someone apart because you take things so literally. If you took everything so literally in life, and truly followed the Bible LITERALLY, you would not have eyes or a tongue. Let God speak, through the teachings in the world, to you. The hatred you've portrayed speaks more about you than it does about Mars Hill. These people that stand up every Sunday are amazingly loving people. This church is my home, and even though I have moved away, it will continue to be so until I move back thanks to the podcasts and resources they make available online. Thank You Mars Hill!
This church truly seeks to love and to teach people in the way that Christ exemplified. Thank you, Mars Hill, for sharing with us who are distant.
Rob bell comes off as a universalist. Twisted doctrines and views especially on Salvation and Hell. No offense but what is being taught isn't the same Gospel of the Word of GOD.
Thank you for doing this! I listen to this podcast as my primary source of inspiration and education.
How can something so right be so controversial? The answer is simple: ignorance. Christianity has long been struggling with ignorant people and their teachings. Regurgitated preaching and beliefs make up a big percentage of what we hear from pastors. R Bell has done his homework spiritually, biblically, and academically. As a devoted follower of Jesus & Pastor I believe Bell has renewed our hunger to study theology, history, and the scriptures in order to develop a wholistic view of Christianity. Like most vital players in our Christian history ( Luther, Tyndall, Wycliff, Augustine, Pelagious, St James, etc...) they too were controversial / heretical to Christians in their day. As time went on we look back at these individuals and thank them for "suffering". All I suggest is that one day people will look back and their view might not be as a heretic but a hero. I thank the God for those who serve at Mars Hill, and pray the mission of that church would bring many to know Jesus...our Messiah.

Rob Bell is a universalist, a heretic. This man is a fool, he needs to be prayed for, and the people that follow his leadership. For the TRUTH, not sugar coated make you feel good trash, go listen to Pastor Mark Driscoll @ the real Mars Hill church.
For a young adult who is continually on the go and can't often get to an established church, the Mars Hill podcasts are great. I checked out their website to see for myself what kind of church they were, and was impressed. Heavy support for activism and volunteerism, with an open mind to every kind of people, culture, and life situation. I think this is an example of what the church should be. As for the podcasts - they're easy to understand as both history and scripture are related to an example from modern life. *just a note - just as every person is different, so too is every church. Some people will love this kind of preaching and message, some won't. Don't hate! Do your homework, and find what's right for you.*
To the guy below upset because Rob Bell said he would want to be the one "left" rather than the one "taken" of the "two in the field" (rapture 'proof'texts), take a look at Where the ones taken are said to be taken TO. You wouldn't want to be the one taken There either, even if you do actually somehow see 'end times' 'proof'texts as literal instead of plainly symbolic.
The teachings from Mars Hill are full of Gods Spirit. Both Rob and Shane really bring Gods word to life in a way that changes people. They have such a passion for living out the heart of God and helping others do the same. And just to set the record straight, Rob does not believe that everyone is going to heaven. As it clearly states in his book, Love Wins, he believes that God loves us so much that he let's us choose an eternity with Him or without Him. But this isn't a review of the book but of the sermons from Mars Hill and all I can say is if you're really serious about becoming more like Christ, these podcasts are a great tool. But beware, because following Christ is a radical ride that will surely take you way outside your comfortable pew seat and broaden your mind to a God that loves... Even them!
Soul food!!! Refreshing, liberating, transforming.
I can't get enough of Rob Bell's books and sermons. Rob teaches from the Bible and encourages followers to critically read and think about how we can apply biblical teachings in our lives today. His approach to teaching the Bible is honest, interesting, entertaining and thoughtful. I don't understand why people are so threatened by him.
Just like his newest book Love Wins, Rob Bells teachings are heretical... NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO HEAVEN!!!!!! Rob Bell teaches that everyone will..... THAT IS NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You can't pick and choose scriptue and twist it to fit your new age views..... If it's not in Scripture and you teach it as if it were like Rob Bell Does YOU ARE A HERETIC !!!!
I am not someone who gets off on being critical. I own every Nooma, all of Bell's speaking tours, books, paid money to see him live three times. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. But Love Wins was the last straw for me. I am not someone who is wanting anyone to go to hell. I grieve at the idea. But to all the Rob Bell apologists I have one major issue with the book ( and I have read it)...in the book he says God can't be a good God and send someone to hell. The irony here is that Bell has already decided these two truths cannot co-exist . He is being dogmatic and narrow minded about this. But why is it that all of us who disagree with him are seen as narrow minded and dogmatic?
I clicked on this thinking it was the Mars Hill church in Seattle. ACK! This is NOT the teaching I was looking for. I want the truth from God's Word, not this.
Excellent exegesis combined with thoughtful, contemporary engagement.
Any time you can drive home from church and have a great conversation with your spouse, that's a good thing. Sometimes we really get what's preached. Sometimes it takes some time to digest. Sometimes it rubs up against those things I learned as a child and young adult. Sometimes it opens our eyes. The point is, it does something. God is not stagnant.
Be careful of truths mixed with false teachings. Many of the sermons that are thought at Mars Hill are “feel good” teachings that are contrary to the foundational teachings of the Bible. If you currently enjoy the sermons I recommend you put the teachings of Christ, above the popularity of man, test everything, using the Bible as your answer sheet. Personally, I hold nothing against Rob Bell as a brother, but I feel his teachings are misleading to the body. Listen with decrement.
Rob Bell's messages help me to understand God from different angles.
As much as I enjoyed our visit, the trip is too far for every Sunday. Thanks for the podcasts as a way to catch up and discuss each week with my family members who attend!
Thankfully, the 'love' that actually wins is not the 'love' Rob Bell hopes for. It has a nice wrapper....but ironically its the same ole tried and true generic fill-me-up-and-make-me-feel-good 'religion' that Bell claims he's breaking away from.
Thank you Rob Bell and Mars Hill for the quality of thought, theology and purpose you put into every podcast. It is truly appreciated.
I am a pastor in the ELCA and for some of you that may be a sin in and of itself. However, after reading some of the other reviews and I am disheartened to read some of the negative reviews due to the guest preachers Mars Hill invites to speak. This podcast and therefore the preachers are an excellent resource for theological thinking, spiritual guidance and preaching ideas. You may not agree with everything said at Mars Hill or with every preacher but I would think that is hardly the point. I do not recall Jesus saying "Go therefore...and agree with each other". The Christian Community is one gathered first and foremost in the name of Christ, NOT first and foremost around theological and doctrinal agreement (isn't that what the Pharisees were after). I applaud Mars Hill and its leadership for bringing different Christian perspectives to the pulpit and I pray that God speaks through all of them...even if we don't 'agree' with them. Thanks Mars Hill.
Downloads immediately and is great quality. So grateful for this!!
It'll download with 4.2!!!!! My life just got better!
Would love to download more! This is how I go to church. Please fix it? Please.
What gives? Looks like this has been a long standing problem, maybe the IT folks at Mars Hill need some help?
Like many of you I love this podcast and have had the same issues downloading straight to my iPhone. I discovered by accident that if you plug your device into your computer with iTunes, let it update and do it's thing, and unplug when directed, you CAN go back and download the messages using your phone or iPod. But... You have to do this each time! Not ideal. Until Mars Hill fixes whatevers going on, I will be doing this! Hope that helped :)
Ur server is not correctly configured according to iTunes ...please update for everyones sake
I really like to listen to these podcast but it won't play on my iPhone. (or anyone else's apparently.) thanks
Please fix!! Love the teachings and I wanna be able to download them to my iPod touch!!! Thx and GBU :)
Please fix this problem, I love listening to Shane or Rob, great teachers
What's the deal, why can I no longer download this podcast directly to my phone? Would have rated it five stars about 3 weeks ago, but this is just disappointing.

It says, it cannot be played on my iPod too. Sad day as this podcast is my favorite. Please fix it!
I'm getting the same "the selected file cannot be played on my iPhone 3GS. Sad. Wish I could.
This used to be a great podcast but I can't play them anymore. When I smash this stupid iPhone and get something that works maybe I'll review again.

These are so beautifully, uplifting, and challenging sermons.
Rob Bell is an excellent teacher and captivating speaker. I do not belong to this church, and before I started listening to this podcast, I really didn't want much to do with church at all. Rob is a refreshing voice in a religion that can be reflected as stagnant and filled with hypocrites — depending on denomination and teachers. Rob is a real human and relates the Bible, the teachings of Christ, and many other aspects of Christianity to daily life and troubles. He's comforting and encourages listeners to live, communicate, and worship more honestly. I got a kick out of jiginc88's comment about how this podcast contemplates more about how to live daily life than how to "grow in holiness". How else can we begin to grow if not in our daily lives? Personally, I am not interested in a podcast that focuses on man's (often wicked) interpretations of the Bible. I choose to focus on goodness, love, and feel a sense of warmth from my faith, not fear.
Peace to all who have carried the Gospel message at Mars Hill. It is pure joy to have access to incredible scholarship presented by such great communicators. Nobody there claims to have it all 100% perfect or I would run far far away. As an addition and inspiration to my local church and the several other sources of teaching I follow, Mars Hill is clear evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in the church. Teaching, healing, evolving, loving, and representing the Jesus of scripture is what this place is all about. My discipleship is stronger because of your work in the Kingdom and the spreading of the Gospel from Grand Rapids to the ends of the Earth. Keep up the good fight! -Peace and Grace
i was the biggest fan/supporter of rb and nooma. showed the vids all the time to my youth group. listened to his podcast daily and purchased alot of past sermons. In his message "wine" he made a very disturbing statement against the rapture of the church. He made a number of humorous (?) statements about not believing in the rapture. I was shocked, but instead of over-reacting, i emailed rb. three weeks later i recieved and emailer from a mhbc staffer stating that it is true, mhbc does not believe in the rapture of the church...the tribulation mentioned in matt 24 and revelation, etc. believes that it was all symbolic to throw the romans off the early churches trail etc...said they ascribe to some archbishops teaching. said that Jesus' statement of "two in the field, one taken, the other left" he said he wants to be left. just very disturbing that we can throw out the scriptures that dont mesh with our belief systems. i do not want to cause division...just make people aware of false teaching.

Rob Bell blows my mind. I look forward to this every week!
