I am often in the undesirable position of having to see that look in someone's face, clearly thinking "does he believe in evolution?" when presented with the knowledge that I am a Christian. It is equally undesirable to defend evolution to many people who share my faith. Do I believe in evolution? No, I don't believe in it. I accept it based on what we know of biology and genetics and in the face of overwhelming evidence to support it. What I find worrying on both sides of this argument is the lack of defining what evolution really is, before launching into impassioned arguments for or against it. I find it especially ironic as well, considering that it was an interest in, and lay study of evolution and then philosophy that helped me rediscover my faith in my early 20's. Honestly, I'm tired of the debates. I keep thinking to myself, "I'm done talking about it. I have no cognitive dissonance between my faith, and the scientific evidence for evolution." But, I keep coming back to it, like a bad train wreck. For the faithful: the acceptance or non-acceptance has nothing to do with your salvation, that alone lies with Christ. To the atheistic, evolution, and indeed science in general, have nothing to say about God. God cannot be studied according to the scientific method, therefore science says nothing for or against God. This argument has done nothing but sown division, and I'm tired of it.
