Adventures In Design

Reviews For Adventures In Design

so many podcasts and youtube channels are great for news and surface level discussions, but Brickey’s attention to detail, storytelling, and breaking down topics piece by piece is truly top tier. You can tell his love for the parks runs so deep, he is incredibly knowledgeable, and every episode feels like a chat with a friend. Thank you for all your work here and on your youtube channel, Brickey! Your work and dedication is inspiring and brings me and my family so much joy.
Relatable interviews and advice about being a creative looking to make your daydreams your day job which is why I started listening. Why I became a loyal listener is because of Mark and his buds’ ability to make you a part of a daily conversation amongst friends taking about not just being a creative but also a person, a spouse, a partner, a friend, an employee(or not), etc navigating today’s world. 5 out of 5 Brickeys.
This podcast is top notch and just overall RAD! The conversation is real, authentic, and accurate to the challenges that come with being artists, marketers, and designers. If you’re looking for perspective and to learn from the experience of others, this is the podcast for you. Mark is one of the pied pipers these industries need! - Mike Brevik
I used to love this pod, found it insightful and helpful for creatives at any level in their career. I think the host is trying too hard to be like his hero Howard Stern. There is a nuance to Howard, honed over years on real prime time radio. He’s a genius. Everyone thinks they are like him when they riff but almost no one is and definitely not this show. Mark has no nuance, he comes off like a whiny complainer. Random attacks at celebs cashing in on the pod explosion and complaining that he didn’t understand the appeal of an easy pay platform like Patreon. Nothing sadder than looking at everyone else doing better and blaming them for you not being where you want. You are exactly where you want to be in life, nothing more nothing less. Celebrities joining these platforms, especially those who are really adept at interviews (like Dax) is actually good for less know podcasts as it brings more people to the platform and possibly to your pod. Mark’s voice used to be unique and his own, thoughtful and thought provoking but now he seems desperate for attention and relevance.
Whether you’re well established as someone who can translate creative energy into the impact you want to have on the world, or just getting started as a catalyst for change - this is a must-listen podcast for you! Mark does an incredible job leading conversations that cover a huge breadth of topics related to the ins and outs of building a thriving career and life you can be proud of as a designer - from leaders who’ve actually walked the path. Highly recommend listening and subscribing!
I first subcribed to this podcast years ago. Listened for a while then unsubcribed because the host kept putting down formal education in design. He was also childish, not in a fun/funny way but in an attention-seeking way. A couple years later I heard that an artist I admired was a guest on AID so I listened, felt like maybe I should give it another chance, and re-subscribed. I listened for another year or so but gave up and unsubscribed again. I just can't get past Mark's biases. By his own admission most of the artists he admires are people who drop out of school - and he admires them primarily because they're dropouts and not in spite of that fact. Why? Choosing to enter school and then leave isn't a positive feature. You can like their work in spite of them droping out but to elevate that as the reason for the admiration is concerning. Mark started one episode by calling a college diploma a piece of paper, a common term used by those who are self-taught. A college degree in Graphic Design means you've made it through a formal cirruculum, learned to take critique from your professors and peers, and have an understanding of the history of the craft. These aren't bad things and to have them repeatedly dismissed just took away any desire for me to listen to another AID episode.
The guests have a lot to offer, but I didn’t realize going into it that I would have to skip the first 10-20 minutes (!!) of each episode just to get to the interview. Common downfall of a lot of podcasts is the host talking too much to let the guest get in any of their own words. This show definitely struggles with that as well. A real shame, since there aren’t many good design pods.
First time listening to your podcast. But I follow Tristan Eaton, so I had to listen when I read the title. I agree with everything you said, and you said it so well. Your right to voice your opinion is as American as apple pie. Anyone that tries to shame you into silent is essential being un-American.
Seriously this is a great premise for a podcast. It gets a side of the industry that I don’t see a lot and am super interested in hearing about. Problem is, I don’t really get to hear about it because the host of the show loves the sound of his own voice. He doesn’t leave much opening to his guests by relating every conversation back to him instead of digging into the guests’ experiences. Not to mention the pay wall and click-bait enticements to subscribe to the premium show like the whole Jon Contino thing.
Why not both!? Love this show.
Real talk by real designers. No candy coating. No BS. Always new content
The podcast often has great people from the industry and gives great insight to a field in a way no other podcast or tutorial does. As other reviews mention, get used to hearing Mark talk. If you really want to cringe, listen to episode 957 with Nancea Ceo and count how long he talks at the start of the interview before letting her speak.
Mark is always working at making this show and the love he has for design and some subcultures (favoring gig posters, granted I haven’t tuned in for a year or so but I subscribed and believe in this show. When I have a nice cushion again I’ll be an AID member, until then, here’s a review!
The variety of content that’s offered is amazing and gives very one something to love.
I am a design student coming to the end of my college education. I found Adventures In Design about 18 months ago and have been a COT memebr for the passed year. I can honestly say that the things i have learned about design from AID are comparable to the things i have learned about design from schooling. This podcast has introduced me to countless designers who i was previously unaware, and who i now look up to in this industry. Through the AID Poster Countdowns and Brand Practice episodes i learned about Bad Design vs. Good Design vs. Great Design and tips and techniques to pull off different design elements. Through the AID interview episodes i have learned of other creatives paths in this industry and some Do's and Don'ts of freelance. I have had questions on the busineess side of design that were not discussed in college, yet i got an answer through an episode of Shop Talk with Mark and Billy where they took questions from listeners. One of the most important things i have gained from this show is not to compare my work to the work i see on social media because who knows how much experience that person has. And finally there's the thing i look forward to as much as paychecks on Fridays....Hammertime. The AID Network and the COT have definitely helped me to become one of the better designers in my graduating class. I'd even go as far as to say you should save yourself some money on the college education, just subscribe to skillshare and Adventures In Design and you've got a solid start! Thanks for putting the effort into the podcast Mark Brickey!!!
The best podcast out there. If you’re a designer this podcast is gold, and if you’re not (why not?) this podcast is gold. Mark is one of the most honest, genuine, entertaining hosts I’ve listened to. And it’s daily!
Adventures in Design is a great podcast -- super informative, deeply knowledgeable, filled with emotional stories of real people, and totally hilarious. You get to know the returning "characters" and feel like you're just hanging out, but hanging out getting great conversations and reveling in their successes, and filled with empathy for their setbacks. It's really THE podcast for working class creatives -- people who don't think they're doing some mystic magic, but are instead there in the trenches with their clients, building something better for everyone. It's rad finding my tribe -- other people that think in very similar ways to me, and nerd out about the same things I love. And just as important, the community of working class designers that has sprung up around the show -- we're not just listeners; we feel like we're part of a group. In the same way that there's a network of punk bands across the country, connected by touring, we have a network of creatives and weirdoes around the world that is being connected by AID. And we're befriending each other through the Slack channel, social media, and meeting up in person when we travel. I consider these folks real friends. Come join the circle.
I listen everyday, recently I became a member of the AID Circle of Trust (COT) and am not looking back. Everyday for an hour (more content in each episode in the COT... Join today!!) I get to hang out with people who are just trying to do what they can to make their world a cooler better looking place. Check out Mark and his buds in the world of design. Learn a little, laugh a lot and make some friends.
With new episodes every day, there is always something different to listen to. If you fall behind, it just means more to listen to. The best, most inspiring creative podcast to listen to x 1,000!
This podcast always delivers the most premium content on the market. AID is so much more than a design podcast, it’s like the most perfect playlist of curated content served up weekly. Mark really is one of the best interviewers I’ve heard on a podcast. Does his homework, asks the right questions, and does it all while still being able to bust balls every now and then. 10/10 would recommend.
This is a great, funny, informative podcast. I've learned so much about the world of design, music, illustration, business, and media by subscribing to this podcast. It wasn't long after I subscribed that I joined the circle of trust, which is 100% worth it. I get at least two hours of content to keep me moving every day. This podcast is definitely worth your time.
Everyday a new podcast everyday I listen. Great inspiration and makes you excited for every creative adventure you have going on.
If I were stuck on a desert island with only one podcast to listen to, it would be AID.
Adventures in design is the first thing I listen to Monday through Friday. This podcast consist of episodes breaking down current events and television, long form interviews, health and wellness and chats that feel like your having a conversation with your friends. Be sure to sign up for the Circle of Trust so that your able to listen to every bit of each episode. Well worth the few extra dollars(Been a member for years).
As a creator of anything you know how lonely it can get. To have AID on while working on your craft is like have a room full of best friends or great co-workers. I couldn’t recommend this podcast enough. Juggalo Derrick of Relish Brand
**Update - Nov. 2018** I've always loved this podcast, but over the years it has turned into one of the most important and informational discussion I get to join in on every day. The guests, the topics, and the community that it has engendered are both timely and relevant. The lessons AID teaches have helped shaped my career and my design aesthetic. I continue to highly recommend this. If you listen for free, you need to jump over to AID.network and sign up for the "circle of trust", there's even more amazing discussion for members. I’ve been listening to AID for years, and it has been an incredible resource since the beginning. The interviews are always inspiring and there is constantly something to learn from all the different people who appear. Whether it’s an artist, a musician, a poster maker, a marketer, etc… there is a wealth of information in this podcast. Mark is a stellar host who establishes an easy rapport with the guests. Its something I binge listen to and am always glad to see a new file pop up on the podcast. Highly recommended.
There are too many design podcasts, but this one is far ahead of all the others. It’s very well produced. The host, Mark Brickey, and his recurring guests make a great cast of characters that provide often hilarious real talk, as opposed to the standard flavor of artist interviews. Over the years, AID has become a network of multiple shows that cover a variety of topics: Logos and branding, entertainment, poster design, health. There’s something here for every kind of creative. For someone like me, who isn’t surrounded by creatives on a daily basis, AID makes me feel like I’m hanging with my people. By the way, a Circle of Trust membership is well worth it.
Mark brings a great energy to every episode and puts the time in to craft a great story from every person that comes onto the show with him. He sells the person across from him and keeps the conversations interesting, engaging and entertaining. This podcast has motivated and entertained me for over a year and there is definitely no stopping anytime soon, and I hope that Mark keeps the circle of trust train rolling for years to come.
Seriously, this has to be the best podcast I listen too. It is hilarious, insightful and unpretentious! The show has a lot of variety and a ton of personality, ranging from random topics like food and music to industry and personal advice. They talk about the stresses of design culture but also showcase the benefits of doing something creative for a living. Mark Brickey really nailed it. Out of my top 5 podcasts, this one takes first place no question. Whether youre a designer, artist, musician, entrepreneur... hell, whatever you do this podcast has so much substance youll find something that fits what you need. Take a listen, it is fantastic!
I’m on board. I’ve listened to Marky’s rambling for long enough to not be a member. Plus I’m sick of him guilt tripping us freeloaders.😁 Thanks for keeping us company with great content. Cheers. 🍻 SXE 😂
Finally a podcast that breaks the idea of design being precious. Getting past all your personal hang ups and really listening to the shows and interviews Mark paints a picture that life is tough and it is what you make of it. If passion drives you no matter what the field this is the one for you. Well worth the time and investment to come away with some tasty chicken nuggets of knowledge and perspective, and if you dont enjoy it then hey... at least you got some chicken..and thats somthing.
The best podcast ever⚡️💀⚡️💀⚡️
Enjoyed the guest, wanted to learn more, but had to turn off: host keeps interrupting interviewee and turning conversation to himself. Amazing he hasn’t ID’d or done anything about this tendency- will check back in while to see if it has improved.
Love the podcast, I try and listen to it as much as possible at my boring desk job. Thanks for helping me thru my days with some inspiring guest and conversations. Keep up the good work
Mark is a great host and always has great guests on. Perfect to listen to when your grinding away drawing shapes.
This podcast covers some interesting ground by MY GOD does the host talk a lot. One recent episode had 11.5 minutes of preamble before the guest showed up, and we were at 14 minutes before the guest was really talking. I'm fine with sponsorship messages but a lot of this is the host just being needlessly long-winded. So that's my feedback.
I first started listening to this podcast for inspiration. The shows guests would often be design professionals that I looked up to. To hear the “ins and outs” from all these professionals that I looked up to was quite a treat. Now it’s turned into something so much more than that. It’s pretty much the only podcast I listen to. I highly recommend giving this podcast a few listens and eventually becoming a circle of trust member. It’s totally worth it!
A good, inspirational podcast.
I've been listening to AID for years & it's my very favorite podcast. I listen daily & have gained so much professionally from Mark & all of the guests.
Mark Brickey was born to talk but don’t let his crass, boisterous delivery fool you. Hidden just below his blue collar bravado are gems of inspiration for budding artists, designers and entrepreneurs alike. Mark’s ability to connect the real life experiences of his guests, whether mega successful artist, corporate leaders or up and coming talents, with the struggles of his audience make him a treasure for anyone who is trying to make a go at making a living off their passion.
I've been listening daily for the last 3 months (sometimes 2-3 episodes a day!), and I've subscribed to the Circle of Trust. You cannot beat the amount of advice or guidance (mixed with a good laugh or a special guest) for the money. Seriously. If you are a Graphic Designer, a Printer, Illustrator, or any other type of creative... This is an invaluable resource. Hell, even if you're just looking to start your own business as a entrepreneur or freelancer in a non-creative field... You can find nuggets of wisdom throughout. Highlight episodes to check out are the DKNG show and Shop Talk. Topics sometimes cross paths of current events, but it is done with good taste; Adventures in Design sometimes talks about politics if the subject matter of the episode crosses those paths. Do not let other reviews scare you... This is NOT a politically heavy show. There might be 1-2 episodes out of the 500+ that are "heavy" politically. Give it a listen! TL;DR: If you are a designer, illustrator, creative, or freelancer... This will inspire you and give even the most seasoned veterans of the creative field some advice and guidance. You. Will. Get. Hooked.
I’ve listened to the show since ep 19. The show has been my coworker, the drumbeat to keep marching strong, and a reminder you can design the life you want. After all, Mark did.
Was looking for some inspirational podcasts from fellow artists and makers and this got great reviews so I was excited to listen...then he ranted about Trump for a half hour. Hard pass.
Great to listen to at work. Keeps me inspired til the end of the work day then I go into the studio ready to paint!
Just push download, listen for an hour, then give the man your money. I have been a paying Circle of Trust member for the last 550 episodes and have only skipped over one episode. I have never opened Photoshop but that doesn't matter because this show is about designing happeness into your life. I litterly get stressed when he goes on vacation because I wont have new episodes that week.
Imagine having Vanessa Foley on your show and forgetting to let her talk.
Today I deliberately took a route to the office that I knew would put me into a traffic jam just so that I could finish the last twenty minutes of a great interview. Even accounting for the mass of a vending machine, this podcast is worth its weight in gold.
As an artist trying to get into selling my stuff for the first time it's intimidating. This podcast has helped guide me when it comes to this. Not only that but the guys are hilarious. Helpful and funny is a great thing. Definitely take advantage of such a great podcast
I haven't grabbed the Circle of Trust yet but I've gotten so much enjoyment and I've turned some friends on as well. Love it.
