Retronauts

Reviews For Retronauts

It’s amazing how far this show has fallen. I was a listener through the various iterations. The new (British?) hosts are terrible. I wish Jeremy and Bob had their own show, even if it was only a few times a year. If you are jumping into this show now, just avoid it. You are better off going back to listen to the 1up days on archive.org.
This podcast is so frustrating to listen to these days. The latest episode was about Doom Clones….and they spent 90% of the time just talking about Doom itself. There are hundreds of clones but you only mentioned the main ones that was built off of the build engine…but skipped games like Strife, Dark Forces, Disruptor, Chex Quest, etc. There use to be a lot of research going into these episodes, and there still is from certain host…but man I sometimes think that you take these negative reviews and are like “yeah, we are doing something right!” But you really aren’t.
Used to be one of my favorite gaming podcasts. Older episodes like the dragon quest one where very involved and made me feel Ike I had an understanding of the game. The new hosts seem to ramble about how great things are, and while I feel their excitement I often walk away from an episode not getting a good idea of what the game like. I listened to the recent Mickey castle of illusion episode and I didn’t really get an idea of the game’s levels, story or mechanics.
I think it’s great that Jeremy wanted to keep the podcast going and invited fresh voices to the table. I do think that the show is currently getting the kinks out of the new format but I think it still is an enjoyable listen. One slightly negative thing I will say, the episodes where they talk about film are often not as good because the hosts lack the depth of knowledge on film that they have on video games.

New hosts are kind of annoying and one note.
It would be better without Stuart he’s so negative and just seems to hate everything
Avoid all Bob Mackey episodes
The current product is near unlistenable. A lot of negativity and condescension (but that’s the majority of video game commentary). However, the need to inject political or cultural viewpoints into each episode corrupts the discourse. The good news is there is hundreds of episodes. Simply go back and download the ones without Stuart, Bob, or Ray. Any episode with Benj Edwards or Chris Koehler is a good start. Even if Bob Mackey talks over them.
I hadn’t thought of this podcast in years, but it came up on another podcast. Tried listening to 3 episodes and they were just negative and seemed uninterested in the topics. There is also repeated ableist language. Just gross. I’ll pass.
One star. You are wrong about the Mario movie, and the Minions too. They are great! This show used to be good many years ago with guests like Shane Bettenhausen, now they are just bitter old people who hate fun. Here is a poem: Retronauts, purveyors of the pixel-packed past, Your take on the new Mario film was overcast. Stuck in 8-bit, dodging the Koopa Troop, Missed the Power Star, in your endless loop. Where is Shane, the Power-Up in the gloom? His wisdom shines, makes the old games bloom. He sees the Rainbow Road, where you see only Pitfall, While you're stuck in Pac-Man's maze, hitting wall after wall.
Retronauts in 2023 is a bad podcast. There is no consistency in hosts but regardless of who is behind the mic the content is just a routine rundown a list of games with off the cuff personal anecdotes and opinions.
I listened to the first 18 minutes of your Super Mario Movie podcast and was blown away. I will say that I believe constructive criticism is beneficial in the sense that it may compel those who are working on the next movie to produce a better product. However I thought you all were downright disrespectful. A lot of people worked very hard to make this movie and you trashed them harder than they deserve. More importantly your gross 911 joke at around the 18 minute mark lost me as a listener for life. If you feel the need to preface a statement like that by saying “sorry to New Yorkers”, then maybe just don’t make the comment. For anyone who lived in NYC or the surrounding areas during 911, enough time will never pass for that to be acceptable. You should be ashamed.
The South Park episode will be the last one I listen to. 2hrs long and talked about the games for 20min. Barely wikipedia level research recited by the usual games-press types. These podcasts are all over the place without the professional Jeremy Parish at the wheel.
I’ve been listening for at least 6 years and I really love everyone on the podcast. I do find Stuart to be a bit pretentious at times but it was never enough to stop listening until now. I don’t understand why he feels the need to be pretentious and mean spirited. It brings down the show. I’ve noticed that I’ve been listening less and less because of it. Definitely don’t see myself subscribing to the Patreon again. Everyone else is so fun and does such a great job. This show has consistently been in my top 4 over the years. I really don’t hate Stuart but he just brings down the vibe sometimes. Just 1 person’s opinion. Check out the show for yourself. Previous Review: AMAZING PODCAST! Always well researched and the discussions are always great. The only criticism I have is that it’s starting to feel like every other episode is a preview for the Patreon, but that’s not a big issue since the Patreon is 100% worth it! I’m subscribed to this and Talking Simpsons, which I also recommend. I can’t always afford it but when I can it’s a real treat. Also don’t listen to all the triggered conservatives hypocrites. The same people who claim they don’t want to hear politics are the same people who would be praising them if they were vocal Trumpers. When they say they don’t want to hear politics they just mean they don’t want to hear politics they disagree with. Everything is politics. If the lead character of a game is female or a person of color it’s considered “woke politics”. There’s no getting around it. Someone actually said these guys were “radical leftists”. Something as simple as disliking a sexist portrayal of a woman in a game is enough to get you labeled as a radical. Anyway, awesome podcast. Highly recommend.
Across all shows he makes appearances on, Henry has become the exact type of person he’s always hated: fake. He’s so far counting likes he’ll say or agree to anything as long as it makes him sound progressive. He acts like he has never spent the time to think on his own and critically evaluate himself. Maybe rather than professing from his progressive religion, that me as a real progressive find offensive. Also, I am furious at Retronauts for that travesty of an episode about LGBTQ+ representation in games. It was poorly researched and completely ignored the LGB representation unless it was hyper queer or femme and non-sexual.
I’ve been listening to Retronauts for about 15 years. I just realized today I haven’t even listened to a single episode in 3 months. Let me list the reasons why: 1. The regular hosts (Jeremy and Bob) are almost never even on the cast anymore. Instead they’re replaced by random people I’ve never heard of. 2. All of the best episodes seem to be behind paywalls, including episodes in continuing series (Lucasarts adventures, looks back at decades) that used to be free. I don’t have a problem with getting paid for your work, but I think putting your only good stuff behind a paywall is a little scummy. 3. Most of the new random “hosts” don’t even seem to know anything about the games they’re talking about. Why would you even bother hosting a podcast about something you’re completely ignorant about? I have more problems but those are the main three. It’s just a shame to see what used to be my favorite podcast become a shell of its former self and something I have no interest in listening to.
I used to listen to most of these episodes but I can’t anymore for one reason. I can not listen to Stuart Gipp. If he stops appearing on nearly every episode, I will be a major listener again, but I see his name listed on most episodes.
Drop the gross SJW stuff.
I’m a patron and love listening to this show. I love Bob, Jeremy and the new people- but it’s depressing when the hosts mention “how old” they are when talking about an older game with a big “sigh”. They aren’t even old. They seem mention it every single time, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having some years under your belt. If anything, it makes for a better podcast since you have more life experience and knowledge to share.
Very informative, but I could do without the politics… also please do not invite shivam back to your podcast.. shivam came off extremely cringey in that street fighter 3 episode
So great even better since Stuart Gipp came on
Great podcast absolutely love it but could you do an episode on worms please
I used to love this podcast but over the years it seems to have morphed into something else. The regular hosts seemed to have switched to the PATREON only podcasts. Speaking of which; those seem to be the good episodes with the good topics and hosts. I don’t mind donating to PATREON podcasts but in this case it feels like they are forcing into paying unless you really care about non-video game 80s movie topics.
I’ve been listening to Retronauts for 15(!) years now and it’s still consistently one of my favorite podcasts. I’d really like it if Retronauts would make it possible to subscribe on Apple Podcasts — and other services for people using different podcast apps — it makes it easier to keep track of episodes. I know Apple takes a cut, so the Retronauts team has to make those considerations if it’s worth it or not. I just know I’d totally subscribe to one of my favorite podcasts if it was more easily accessible.
Love this show and used to listen religiously but now they save the best topics for paid subscribers. A lot of casts do this. My issue with Retronauts, however, is that their feed has become overwhelmingly just previews for these gated episodes. It’s super scummy and just reminds listeners that the entire show has moved to one you must pay to enjoy.
This show has been around longer than video games. They were one of the first podcasts I ever listened to and for good reason. This show is great. I learn so much and am always laughing. Keep it up!
I was fond of this back in the day, but attempting to revisit old haunts I’m finding it fairly abrasive to listen to, kinda iffy vibes for a game show and particularly so for a retro one. There’s far more than enough resources that I don’t need to ramble or complain much but it is a shame.
One of the longest running retro video game podcasts (it was originally on the roster of the dear departed gaming podcasts from 1UP.COM), Retronauts now looks at game series and pop culture from the days of yore or not so yore. Witty, knowledgable, and seasoned, this is a classic of the podcasting form.
I used to listen to this podcast, fell off for some reason, and figured I’d give it another try. Not even three full episodes in, I remembered why I quit. 1) Some of the hosts are so full of themselves that it feels like you’re listening to “Um, Actually: The Podcast”. All too often the other voices are interrupted by the host interjecting to add in a fact that he knows (“look how smart I am”) or to offer a dissenting opinion (“actually you’re wrong because…”). It gets really annoying. 2) I don’t know how they choose which host does which podcast, but they really need to do a better job. During the Advance Wars podcast, the host admits that he just can’t figure out the game or play it without a guide. He then complains that the tutorial missions go on too long, but apparently he didn’t pay attention to them anyway? During the Street Fighter III podcast, the host says the following of the parry system (an integral part of the game): “I’ve been playing Street Fighter III for 20 years and I just can’t wrap my mind around it.” HUH?!?! 3) Political digressions. I don’t care about politics, either side of the aisle, so I really don’t want them in my video game podcasts. But I guess these guys do. 4) Since I’m being nitpicky, some of these hosts have absolutely horrible voices and are a pain to listen to. Given that some of these podcasts run for 2 hours, it can be a real struggle. Additionally, certain guests sound like they’re recording in a cavern, or with their cell phone, so the shifts in quality can be really jarring. Their are also a fair number of hosts / guests who smack their lips, stammer endlessly, or have the classic “wet mouth” sound when speaking. There’s also way too much “um”, “er”, or “but yeah” space-filling. A little audio cleanup would go a long way. This is a podcast I really want to like, but I just can’t. It’s a shame.
THE NO ONE RETRO PODCAST OF ALL TIME AND ETERNITY AND FOR THE REST OF THE HOSTS LIVES (or until they run. Out of games(which is highly unlikely!)
Just listen to it, all your friends are right.
Like many other have said, leave the politics out of your podcast. Every time I think “maybe this time they will go the entire episode without bashing or complaining about X, Y or Z” and everytime someone lets me down. Just can’t help themselves. No one thinks you’re a saint because you take a subtle (or horribly obvious) jab at people or policies you don’t like. All you are doing is taking us out of the podcast or discussion you’re having, not to mention how it makes everyone sound miserable. On a podcast about nostalgia and good times… Well done. Besides that, everyone sounds like a smug know-it-all. the topics covered are almost always something that maybe 10% of the audience cares about. the little music breaks are annoying and a waste of time. Everyone just talks over each other. The only positive thing I can say is that the podcast seems mildly well produced.
One of the best history of video game podcasts. But the shows do take a dip in quality if Jeremy or Bob aren’t hosting.
I had heard of Retronauts for years and saw Jeremy in Analog Frontiers by My Life in Gaming and finally got into it. I’ve been marathoning episodes at work and love it. I’ve now discovered games I missed from my childhood and can’t wait to check out!
Love 🧧🎏🎐🌅
I’ve been listening to Retronauts since the 1up days. There is no better podcast for anyone who loves old games or even just fondly remembers them.
Take a shallow dip into interesting gaming topics. I think it used to be good but that was so long ago, I can’t even remember. Good to have playing in the background if you aren’t a fan of white noise.
This is the best comedy podcast on YouTube. These guys are a hoot and a holler! You won’t BELIEVE the wild hijinks that ensues. Jeremy (aka “the cute one”) is easily my favorite. I even like the segments where they talk about video games! Highly recommended!
You guys have been telling me to write a review for YEARS! So, here ya go. Scrolling through all the old stuff, as I have gone back to the “beginning” to listen through again. I decided I’d finally write a review! To anyone reading this wondering if you should check out Retronauts, you must certainly should. I don’t know how else to say it, but this is the best retro gaming podcast on the internet. These guys are great a super knowledgeable about video games. Thank you Jeremy and Bob! So much. Really you have made my life richer listening to you guys and consuming all the knowledge you provide in the show. I just listened to the episode where you guys were informed that iwata had passed. It hurt all over again…
I like Jeremy and Bob a lot, even if some of their guests aren’t as good ;) They know much more about games and history of games than many in the same space, and while they do share their feelings, it is often within a well researched and professional space. I will say that I listen to them a lot less recently, as their interesting topics are often behind a paywall that I just can’t afford right now.
I’ve been listening since the 1up days, but I’ve faded recently. You have to keep a separate app on your phone to listen to this podcast because they’re making a moral stand against Spotify or something but end up on the same podcast network as Adam Corolla occasionally. If you don’t subscribe to the Patreon (which I have) your feed gets filled with spam “preview” episodes, and the actual episode doesn’t always come out later. Also you have to have played the episode’s subject, because the loose conversational nature means someone coming in fresh will be better served reading Wikipedia. So if an episode only serves my interest sometimes in between pointless “previews” and is as informative as a Reddit post, I don’t listen regularly.
I try to find gaming podcasts that actually just stick to that topic, but I have come to find it is impossible to find because apparently every video game podcaster is an miserable leftist that can’t let go of politics. Please just stick to video games and leave the politics out of it.
I only recently discovered podcasts and was interested in listening to some covering retro gaming. I started Retronauts at the beginning of the list offered in the iTunes podcast app and it was a really pleasant surprise! Jeremy and Bob are very knowledgeable on the subject and you can tell they’ve lived and played through the original releases as I did growing up in the 1980s and then through the further offerings into the 1990s and 2000s. Jeremy, Bob and their guests are very enthusiastic about their experiences with games and the gaming community. Their conversations are always interesting and allow me to reminisce about my own experiences playing these games in my childhood. I enjoy the podcast crew so much that I end up listening to ones with topics that I’m not familiar with just because I enjoy their discussions. Thanks for providing a quality listening opportunity for us all!

Oh awesome, they’re covering a game I love! Oh wait, it’s just a preview of a Patreon-exclusive episode... I get that they need to make money, so sure... do Patreon-exclusive episodes or whatever you need to do, but I’m not a fan of preview episodes appearing in my feed and getting my hopes up that it’s a full non-Patreon exclusive episode.... that’s just a bummer.
If you can look past the radical alt-left commentary from the hosts, this podcast is a great trip down memory lane that will have you smiling as you recall the games you played as a kid.
I love these guys’ passion for video games. They definitely know their stuff and are a lot of fun to listen to!
But he said 5 shrines in the BotW episode not 4 shrines
