Update: Aug. 2023--sad to say, I'm unsubscribing: can't handle the loud and disruptive sound of Steve constantly bumping/banging on his mic.
I appreciate the content, suggestions, historical context, and general tone of caring towards the athletes. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Steve, for the sake of your listeners, please exercise these basic mic techniques: please stop jostling/banging your mic (you do this on your Growth Equation podcast, too), and please use your mute button if you feel a cough coming on. I don't drink alcohol, but for those who do and who enjoy drinking games: "eck-cetera." :-)
These two gentlemen do a terrific job of combining their joint experience, with current running trends, technology and science to create the best run coaching podcast on the market. They recognise their bias when they have it and do a really good job of following the science. This is a podcast strictly about running for runners and coaches. I’ve incorporated a lot of their suggestions into my training and coaching with good results.
Keep up the great work!
After running D1 in a program where everyone was constantly injured and no one was having fun…I’ve first hand scene the value of good coaching and grounded wisdom. This podcast is the GOLD Standard for what coaches should strive for. Following Steve and his colleagues I’ve learned so much and developed so much as an athlete. Thanks for the knowledge and inspiration!
I wish that Steve would find a different co-host. Even when Marcus makes good points he says it in such a condescending way that I don't want to listen. Not an episode goes by that he doesn't shoehorn in some unnecessarily contrarian opinion, brag about how many books he's read (and how that makes him a way smarter coach than you), and complain that no one understands Lydiard as well as he does.
This podcast is excellent for coaches. But for the love of all things coaching - TELL LISTENERS WHERE TO GO FOR YOUR SCHOLAR PROGRAM! Myself; like most others, listen to this while driving or walking, last thing I want to try to remember when I’m done driving is go searching through show notes, etc to find how to sign up for a program. Instead of raving about it each week & saying; “sign up now”. Rave about it the say; “to join, go to www…..”
Steve and Jonathan provide AMAZING ideas and strategies for running coaches and coaches of other sports alike. Thanks for your time and hard work, guys!
Love the material covered and knowledge. It’s super distracting though when one of the hosts (or someone near them) is eating something with a crinkly wrapper, microwaving things, drinking something, etc..... I’ve had to turn off a couple episodes and delete them because the noise there is so distracting, I don’t even hear the content :(.
There are very few resources out here for endurance coaches as this one. Their Scholars Program provides even more context and training, as well. I appreciate you both bringing in different experts (Joe Vigil, Mike Smith (the erudite NAU coach), amongst others) gives a great view of how to get at coaching athletes at various levels.
I echo the discussion on mic etiquette, fellas, but that’s a minor correction that doesn’t lessen the overall content of this FREE resource.
Please bring on Ed Eyestone and Mike Smith after next month’s (fingers crossed) nationals. I’d love to hear their thoughts expounded upon in an open forum beyond the guesswork from the 7 minute comparison in the scholars program.
I seriously cannot thank you enough for this podcast.
I’ll admit that I’m one of those terrible people who don’t “rate and review” on a regular basis, but after tuning into this podcast since it’s inception I’m compelled to do so!
These guys are unequivocally the foremost resource for running coaches in the game today. I rely on them to stay on top of the most recent research, and to break it down into and easily digestible format. They are able to dissect and disseminate this information in an engaging and easily understandable fashion.
I share this podcast on a regular basis, and the content has had a profound influence on how I’ve coached my athletes at both the collegiate and high school levels, in addition to gen pop. I thoroughly enjoy these discussions, download and consume each podcast as soon as it’s released, and consistently look to Mr. Magness and Mr. Marcus to be a “signal in the noise.”
I go out for a run ready to enjoy the podcast and I find myself listening to the same thing again and again. They make great effort trying to explain something but using complicated words and the explanation ended being more complex than the concept being explained. And then again, a mixture of complex words that repeat themselves without saying anything more than if the workout does not work just modify it.
These guys are legit my favorite podcasters (if that’s even a word). They keep it 100, no fluff ever. If you’re looking for real tips and topics over running - tune in!!
Love the podcast and it’s significantly improved my coaching. But some of the audio needs some improvement. The most recent episode, 110 had some bad cross fades where I couldn’t hear each other finish their points. Love everything else! Especially the tangents and conversation nature!
Magness is a solid moderator, but Marcus does not allow the guest to adequately share his/her wisdom, instead bulldozing over them whilst patting himself on the back.
Magness is a calm, reasonable coach who does everything he can to bring order to this podcast. Marcus refuses to stay on topic and seems to willfully shun any sort of organized discussion. Ask him a straight forward question about a kind of workout and he’ll ramble for 10 minutes without even sort of answering it. But he’ll tell you how many books he reads and how many sources he has as often as he can. Likewise, Marcus hijacks interviews by interrupting guests mid-answer to bring up something partially related and that gets sidetracked to the point everyone forgets the original question and we’re all left hanging. However much you like running and/or training theory, this podcast will frustrate you no end.
Magness and Marcus’ podcast is so informative that they should be getting paid! I’ve learned more from their podcast in the past month than I have in the last two years from every other source. These guys cover coaching so in depth that whether you are a coach or a runner, you will find it very beneficial. I cannot recommend it enough. Thanks Schuyler Hall for recommend it to me!
I first stared listening about a month ago and have since listened to almost all the shows available. I’ve been a runner for 13 years and never before have I found a show that goes as deep into the science of running and on how to coach runners and about being a better coach. Keep it up you guys rock!
An informal environment for learning. Thank you sharing your hard earned knowledge. It is clear and refreshing to feel the passion permeate through the dialogue.
This podcast used to be great but it’s really slipped. Marcus fancies himself some kind of street philosopher and the two of them together basically say that you can’t really know anything about training unless you have their experience. They don’t give hardly any actionable advice for runners. The latest episode with David Epstein is another piece of evidence. They have him on just to laud and sell the new Magness and Stulberg boom. These guys really need to get over themselves.
I am a cycling coach and bike fitter. Not a runner. You guys have great comments and philosophies on coaching and I enjoy your podcast. That said, I wish you would know more about Dave Asprey before you trash him. He may not have a degree in whatever, but he is an expert on many things. I am not here to champion the guy, he's not my guru. And I understand your point about following random bio hackers. But there is an enormous amount of useful and actionable info from that world. Science and academia are as flawed as any other domain of knowledge. Keep up the good work and I love your passion for your sport.
I love the podcast and these two guys know what they're talking about. The on ly thing they're missing is a bit of post-production to move the podcast from good to great... Thanks for the efforts. I have learned a lot by listening to both of you.
Love this podcast. Excited every time a new one comes out. Makes you think and revisit and reevaluate some things you do as a coach, and why you do them. You can relate to them because they speak from experience. Always giving the people what they want!
I recently started listening to this podcast after Mario Fraioli recommended it on his Morning Shakeout website. This is a very helpful podcast for a runner like myself who was late in the game to get into the sport. I never competed in school and so was never formally coached in running in my youth. Now, I am making a concerted effort to improve my running and overall athletic performance, which is much more effective with expert guidance. Magness and Marcus provide both philosophical motivation and practical advice on running technique. I find there approach very "down-to-earth", which reminds me not to overthink my training. I will continue to listen to this podcast regularly and use it to inform my running process. Many thanks to both coaches.
Steve and Jon thank you for continuing to give the people what they want. The last few episodes have been excellent not only for running, but some good life advice mixed in as well. Keep bringing passionate content to the people.
I always get excited when I read the titles of each episode, but find they lack structure and don’t deliver on their content. I have no problem with tangents but I don’t see the episodes develop or progress the idea mentioned in the title. Often the idea just gets reiterated repeatedly and isn’t worth the length of time the hosts spend discussing it. I love the premise of this podcast but ultimately feel disappointed by the end of the episodes.
I love the content of this podcast, the blogs of the authors, and their books. But not infrequently they eat while recording their podcast and it is insufferable. It makes the podcast almost unlistenable. So keep up the great work on the content, and get your meals in before or after you hit record.
Thank you for letting us join in on your conversations as coaches. You inspire learning and improvement along side realistic coaching and the sport of running.
Totally agree on your recommendation for Final Surge! It has made my coaching so much easier to interact and plan with my athletes!
Great podcast for a HS/JH Coach. Very simply put for the average person. Love your philosophy on training.
However, the eating sounds makes me want to vomit.
Good premise for a podcast, and these guys have good guests occasionally. However, Marcus is extremely condescending and thinks he knows everything (while pretending to be humble the whole time). He often interrupts, doesn't care to listen to others, and talks waaaay too much. He argues about semantics and the meaning of synonyms... Marcus makes this very difficult to listen to and ruins the podcast.
Steve and Jon go deep into coaching running, covering all topics related to running. But they do much more than provide advice, they go through evidence, provide experience and expound great resources. Great podcast for anyone looking for learning from the pros!
Steve and Jonathan have open and honest discussions of coaching runners from high school through the elite ranks. Their chats remind me of what I love about track where folks are more open about their training methods and can appreciate the acheivements of all runners. As the dad of a distance runner it gives me great topics to discuss with my daughter.
Interesting premise and topics but does not always fully deliver. The conversations can be very meandering and contain little substance beyond two b-list coaches stating the obvious. Magness needs to improve his vocal fry tendency which makes it difficult to take him serious.
Steve Magness is one of the most brilliant minds in our sport - I read all his stuff. When I first heard he came out with a podcast, I knew I had to give it a listen. I was not disappointed. This podcast is just the best. The topics are diverse and interesting - no "cookie-cutter” topics you’re going to find in a textbook. But then neither is the content. Jon and Steve will change your perspective on a lot of topics. They will make you interested in a lot of things you didn’t even realize were relevant to you. They will make you a better coach or athlete, and student of the sport. It’s my favorite running podcast, and I listen to several. It is science-based, without at all being dull and/or sounding like a university lecture. Great work, Jon and Steve - keep them coming.
Awesome podcast. Makes you think about the human side of coaching. Gives a lot of great things to think about when planning training and getting athletes ready for big competitions.
