The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Reaction: Did Sauron Ever Choose Good?

Full spoilers for The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 1, “Elven Kings Under The Sky,” follow. Mary & Blake recap and react to The Rings Of Power Season 2 Episode 1, “Elven Kings Under The Sky,” as the premiere reveals how Adar betrayed Sauron, how the Dark Lord became Halbrand, why Galadriel now feels responsible for his return, and what happens when the Three Elven Rings are finally used. The opening sequence transforms Sauron’s history into the season’s central argument. He begins by standing before the Orcs and demanding their obedience. Adar turns Morgoth’s crown against him, the Orcs stab him repeatedly, and Sauron spends centuries rebuilding himself from black sludge into a human form. His failure teaches him something essential. Power cannot always be seized through open command. People become far easier to control when they believe the idea, desire, or decision belongs to them. The premiere also leaves room for a more difficult question. During his journey toward the form of Halbrand, Sauron encounters a man who tells him that goodness must be chosen again every day until it becomes part of a person’s nature. Sauron appears to listen. Whether he ever seriously considers following that advice remains uncertain. Mary’s rating: 4.8 rings out of 5. Blake’s rating: 4.87 rings out of 5. Sauron appears before an army of Orcs and declares that he will become their new master. The speech immediately reveals why his first attempt at leadership fails. Sauron offers the Orcs another war, more sacrifice, and a future built around his own authority. He treats them as disposable instruments rather than people whose loyalty must be earned. Adar kneels before Sauron and appears prepared to accept him. He then drives Morgoth’s crown into Sauron’s body. The Orcs surround their former master and stab him until a violent burst of energy destroys the chamber. Sauron survives as a dark pool of living matter beneath the mountain. Centuries pass while stalactites grow around him. He slowly consumes insects, animals, and eventually a human body until he can form himself into another shape. That shape becomes Halbrand. During his journey, Halbrand meets an older man from the Southlands who carries the royal sigil Galadriel will later recognize. The man tells him that everyone has committed acts they would rather forget. A person remains good by continuing to choose goodness until it becomes part of his nature. The conversation appears to affect Sauron. When the ship begins to collapse, however, he takes the man’s sigil instead of saving his life. A sea creature attacks the survivors. It charges toward Halbrand and then turns away without striking him. Sauron eventually reaches the raft where he first encounters Galadriel, bringing the flashback directly into the events of Season 1. In the present, Galadriel tells Gil-galad and Elrond that Halbrand is Sauron. Her decision to conceal the truth from Celebrimbor has left the Elves unable to know whether the great smith has received the warning. Galadriel attempts to take the Three Elven Rings from Elrond. Elrond believes every object connected to Sauron’s knowledge should be destroyed, even though Sauron never physically touched the Three during their creation. Elrond escapes with the Rings and leaps from a cliff into the water. He brings them to Círdan, the ancient Elven shipwright, and asks him to cast them i
