Arondir prepares the watchtower of Ostirith for the approaching Orc army. The fortress appears abandoned when Adar and his forces arrive, but Arondir has remained behind to trigger a trap. He fires an arrow into a carefully selected point in the structure, causing the tower to collapse upon the Orcs beneath it. Arondir escapes and returns to the village, where Bronwyn, Theo, and the surviving Southlanders prepare for the next attack. The villagers plant alfirin seeds before the battle, repeating the belief that new life can grow in defiance of death. When the masks are removed from the bodies, the villagers discover that many of the people they killed were fellow Southlanders who had surrendered to Adar and joined his army. The true Orc force then attacks. Arondir fights a massive Orc in a brutal confrontation that nearly ends with a blade entering his eye. Bronwyn kills the Orc and saves him, but she is later struck by arrows and seriously wounded. Arondir attempts to stop the bleeding and cauterizes Bronwyn’s wound. Her survival remains uncertain as the defenders are forced into the tavern and Adar takes control of the village. Adar threatens Bronwyn and the other survivors until Theo reveals the location of the sword hilt. Arondir had hidden it beneath the tavern floor. Before Adar can complete his victory, the Númenórean cavalry arrives with Galadriel, Míriel, Elendil, Isildur, and Halbrand. The Númenóreans drive the Orcs from the village. Galadriel pursues Adar on horseback, while Halbrand takes another route and intercepts him. Halbrand knocks Adar from his horse and nearly kills him. Adar asks whether he murdered someone Halbrand loved, including the possibility of a child. Halbrand demands to know wh
